Congressional corruption is the state where government office-holders use their powers to engage in bribery, money laundering, extortion, or embezzlement of public funds. These are funds that are mostly used to help the masses in development projects. The government leaders who engage in this type of corruption usually use their influence to gain deals while also plundering public resources in the confidence that the offices they hold are not suspect or subject to inquiries.

Congressional corruption

Several factors contribute to corruption. However, at the heart of congressional corruption lies the fact that state officers are paid low salaries by the government (Sumah, 2017). This, therefore, makes them use their influence to improve their monetary status by accepting bribes to facilitate certain tender awards or project allocations. To control congressional corruption, strict laws ought to be set up for when a state official is caught indulging in corrupt to set a precedent for deterring the act (Sumah, 2017). Past efforts have failed due to lenient policies that are not well-outlined to curb the crime.

Corruption in The Criminal Justice System

Corruption in the criminal justice system is harmful to any country. Within the criminal justice system, corruption occurs from the lowest to the highest level along the justice chain (Huber, 2014). This type of corruption is harmful as it mainly leads to wrongful convictions of suspects. It will also result in the release of wrongdoers in the state who will continue to commit crime (Huber, 2014). A good example of this is when a person is arrested for attempted murder, they bribe corrupt officers who want to make money quickly, and they end up being released. This puts the plaintiff in more danger as the defendant could come back and harm them.

Police Corruption

Police corruption has been rampant phenomena across the world. Police corruption can be reduced by using technology such as body-worn cameras, vehicle tracking systems, and having computer programs that track police officers’ transactions on department databases (Sahin, 2010). Although policing is about maintaining the rule of law, it seems as though corruption is rampant in law enforcement (Sahin, 2010). This is because most police chiefs are not strict when dealing with corruption issues within their organizations. The culture of corruption is then nurtured and continues to occur; thus, it seems to be rampant.

Conclusion

Government officials are normally involved in corruption despite the existing regulations available to curtail the vice. At the heart of congressional corruption is the idea that plundering public resources will help these state officials who are paid low salaries by the government advance more by gaining money through shady activities. Corruption in the criminal justice system is harmful as it leads to wrongful convictions of suspects and can also result in the release of wrongdoers in the state who will continue to commit crime. Police corruption seems rampant because of the culture that is nurtured in law enforcement agencies.
