# NPSG.03.06.01; Use Medicines Safely
Record and pass along correct information about a patient’s medicines. Find out what medicines the patient is taking. Compare those medicines to new medicines given to the patient. Make sure the patient knows which medicines to take when they are at home. Tell the patient it is important to bring their up-to-date list of medicines every time they visit a doctor (Joint Commission, 2018).
How I would implement this Goal
I would implement this goal in my nursing practice through taking on a number of steps. The first step would be to have a clear inventory of each of the patients under my care. I would ensure that I accurately update the patients. Secondly, I would ensure my patients have a clear record of the medical condition that they were diagnosed to receive treatment for. I would ensure that accurate records of the health conditions that each of the patient is receiving treatment for is maintained and updated as changes occur. Thirdly, I would ensure that of each of my patients, I have a clear record of the medicines they are scheduled to take, the mode of taking it, and the schedule that they have to observe. This would be so critical to me for the purposes of doing good follow up.

Next, I would find time with each of my patients to ensure that they have the knowledge of what, when and how to take the medications that has been prescribed to them. I would allow the patients to ask questions where necessary so that I can clarify the areas that seem not clear. This would also involve identifying the new medicine that should be added to the medicines that the patient had finished. I would also have a focus on the outpatients who are to take medicines from home. In this regard, I would advise my patients to bring their up-to-date list of medicines every time they come over to visit a doctor.
