This essay aims at unearthing the appropriateness, or lack thereof, of Luzhin as a character and the effects of his interactions with other characters in the story. Among the people affected by his scheme include Sonia, Katerina, Ivanova and the children. The study will embark on Sonia’s point of view with consideration that she had a premonition of Luzhin’s wicked intentions.
Breaking the law is debatable issue considering the issues surrounding Sonia. Although Luhzin’s scheme is brought to the light after much damage has been done, Sonia would have done a lot to help herself and the people affected by his lies. He lied that Sonia stole his money so that he may appear good hearted in his pretended forgiveness. But his deeds bring woes to the other characters including death to Katerina. Considering that Luhzin’s actions are driven by his selfish intentions he is not justified to lay unlawful accusations. On the other hand, had Sonia known his scheme, she may have done her best to stop it. Killing Luhzin, therefore, would have been a justifiable act of lawbreaking since there was a greater goal to be achieved as opposed to personal gain.

In conclusion, there may be a time when an individual can break the law and find a justification for it. The bottom line in this course of action is the underlying intention of the lawbreaker. If the lawbreaker, for example, commits a crime in order to stop another crime from happening there would be justification for that. Additionally, if the crime will stop a criminal from hurting others for his selfish intentions, there should be justification the deed as defense. Thus, had Sonia known beforehand, she would not pass as a lawbreaker if she stopped Luhzin.
