Modern technology has fundamentally changed the life of teenagers in numerous ways since the advent of the 21 st century. These changes have been particularly crucial for those who are being bullied or assaulted as demonstrated by a case of teen who committed suicide after her photos of sexual assault were circulated online. This disturbing development prompted her mother to call for the passing of the Audrie’s Law through Assembly Committee. There are numerous examples that outline the nature of modern technology on teenagers such as cyberstalking and online sexual harassment that are often characterized by people who troll their victims with the intention of exploiting them (Goldberg, 2019). accordingly, there are aspects of virtual harms whereby technology is used as a tool of coercion as illustrated by case of Audrie Taylor Pott who was subjected to mental anguish resulting in her eventual suicide. Consequently, the decision by the mother to advocate for amendment of critical laws to protect and safeguard the lives of people like her daughter perfectly illustrates the dangers of modern technology, especially when it goes digital and encourages sexual harassment cases. Therefore, I believe this law will help prevent rape and sexual assault of individuals who are unconscious because of the stiff penalties that are spelt out in the California law (Siegel & Worrall, 2016). The law is clear on reducing privacy for teens facing convictions of sexual harassment that happen after someone has lost consciousness after taking alcohol or drugs and hence is unable to provide consent. The statutes spelt out in the juvenile sex law will also act as a critical deterrent against victims who may feel unjustifiably embarrassed by modern technologies that expose them to the world.
