Therefore, the aim of this essay is to highlight leadership changes from 1920 to date, highlight modern-day leadership and use the four critical inquiry frames by Western to analyze current leadership styles.

The increased technological advancement has changed the way leadership was implemented. Traditional leadership styles as those of the 1920s are very different from the 21 st -century leadership styles. Leadership style sill continues to change over time as cultural and business practices continue to evolve. It is high time that leaders become prepared for any rapid changes and stay adaptable in order to succeed in modern leadership. Nonetheless, there are certain leadership qualities that can never change; nonetheless, the way people view leadership is bound to change across generations.

Leadership research has become a hotly studied topic among mots scholars. This arises from high profile ethical violations that leaders have been linked with such as the Enron Tyco and WorldCom scandals. Leadership theories cited leaders as being wise, spiritual and authentic. However, this is not the case as witnessed form these high profile scandals. This is an indication that leadership is evolving and there is anteed to understand modern-day leadership. The book, Leadership a Critical Text by Simon Western aims at examining leadership from a critical lens and understand what defines true leader in this modern-day and age.

In the first chapter, Western criticizes the neo-charismatic and trait theories and their view of effective leadership. He also criticizes other theories, such as contingency theory and behavioral theories.
Western focuses on the impact of age, class, sexuality, gender and race/ethnicity on leadership.
In the third chapter, Western describes why effective leadership is crucial for the survival of an organization. He also outlines why traditional forms of leadership style cannot work in a modern-day environment.

Overall, Western’s books represent a critical approach towards leadership and highlight the limitation of the critical leadership theory. Through the book, it highlights the challenges that one can make when trying to understand modern-day leadership.
