In the article “Migration, cultural bereavement and cultural identity” Dinesh Bhugra and  Matthew A Becker analyze the stresses that influence the mental wellbeing of individuals, once they move to a new country and culture. An individual who moves to a new country loses some of the social comforts he or she enjoyed in their original home ( Bhugra & Becker , 2005 ). For example, an individual loses cultural norms, support systems, and religious customs among others. They are forced to adapt to a new culture an embrace a new identity, a fact that has ramifications on their psychological wellbeing ( Bhugra & Ayonrinde, 2004) . According to the authors, there is an increase in the prevalence of mental illness among certain immigrant groups ( Bhugra & Becker , 2005 ). As a result, it is crucial for mental health practitioners to be aware of the stresses and the cultural aspects that have an impact on the experiences of immigrants in a new country.

The main point in the article is that the interplay between immigration and cultural congruity among other stressors have contributed to an increase in mental illnesses among immigrant groups.

The topic is important since the modern society is cosmopolitan, and globalization has encouraged the movement of people from different countries. Therefore, mental health professionals have to be aware of the needs of immigrant if they are to provide meaningful intervention and treatments to the group in case of a mental illness.

In the context of social research, more studies are needed to understand the complex interplay between immigration, culture and mental illness. Such information will go a long way in helping sociologists help immigrants to cope with the stresses.

Some of the crucial terms include the following

Migration: movement from one region to a new one due to social, political, or personal reasons

Cultural bereavement: loss of culture

Cultural congruity: measuring the distinctiveness of a culture

I agree with the main point of the argument. Stress and loss of culture can have a detrimental impact on the mental wellbeing of an immigrant.

The article is comprehensive and well thought out. Even though it leaves the door for further research, it does a good job explaining and proving its hypothesis.

Migration and cultural bereavement contribute to mental illnesses among immigrants. Sociologists need to be aware of the stressors experienced by the immigrant groups so they can be able to help them cope with their new environment and the challenges it brings.

The journal “Migration, acculturation, and the maintenance of between-group cultural variation” by Alex Mesoudi studies how acculturation and migration affects cultural variations within and between groups. The author focuses on the topic by analyzing analogies between cultural and genetic evolution ( Mesoudi, 2018) . Based on genetic models, migration has the ability to break the genetic structure that exists between groups ( Mesoudi, et al., 2016) . In addition, migrants and their descendants acculturate, causing variations in behavior and culture.

The main point in the journal is that migration can change the behavior and cultural norms in a group. The topic is relevant to modern sociology since different groups are moving to new regions due to various pressures. Therefore, understanding the implications of migration is crucial.

Its implications in social research are that it establishes the link between genetics, migration, and cultural variation. It provides sociologists with background to explore the topic further.

Some of the crucial terms include the following

Acculturation: Adopting a dominant culture

Cultural Variation: Refers to the diverse nature of social practices due to the existence of different cultures

I agree with the main point of the argument. When different groups move, acculturation occurs as they try to fit into their new surroundings. .

The article is detailed, but further research is needed to validate it. .

Migration and cultural bereavement contribute to mental illnesses among immigrants. Sociologists need to be aware of the impact of migration on the identity and cultural practices of immigrants. Since the society is cosmopolitan, it is important to understand the cultural variation, especially from the perspective of immigrants.
