All cultures have diverse cultural beliefs per health issues. For example, how a disease can be treated, diagnosed, and cared for and who is entailed in the entire process. Different beliefs and behaviors have different impacts on health issues. A study of the Cambodian people showed that they have underlying reasons to refuse therapy and drugs due to cultural belief systems ( Tran, 2018) . The Cambodians also believe that only the adult male is looked up to make critical decisions on health matters. For example, if one requires medication, only an adult male, who is a member of the family, can decide on the treatment. Thus, they believe that one’s significance and place in the family is more important than one’s health.

The Cambodian people are also reluctant to discuss issues to do with one’s mental status, especially if the patient has a mental disorder. According to D’Anna et al. (2018) These behaviors often denies mentally sick people the opportunity to get timely treatment in addition to standard of care in line with the health requirements of such a patient. According to Tran (2018) the Cambodian believes that discussing such a situation may bring “bad luck” upon the family members and as such, avoid any discussions. Another critical behavior among the Cambodian people is consulting relating and older members of the society on health issues instead of seeking for professional healthcare and treatment ( D’Anna, et al. 2018) . Through their culture, they believe that consulting the older members of society is a respectable aspect of acknowledging the eldest members of the society. It often leaves the patient in poor condition worsening his or her state.

One of the best ways to help the locals of Cambodia is to have an awareness campaign, educate them on the need for professional medication and advise them to abandon cultural behaviors that put patient’s lives at risks.
