Cultural differences are overwhelming differentiation among people of different nations and origins (Brunn, 2019). Many different factors make people different aside from the obvious physical dissimilarities. These differences can often be overwhelming because some practices and beliefs may appear bizarre or unusual for other people who do not understand the culture (Lowe & Archibald, 2009). From watching all the about social care nursing videos, it became pronounced that different approaches must be carried out depending on the patient’s cultural background. For example, some cultures have different ways of managing pain like acupuncture and cupping ("Incompetent vs. Competent Cultural Care," 2011). “Jumping the gun” or rushing a conclusion based simply on what is seen is not always helpful. By rushing into judgment, a nurse often fails to get the right decision. In the case of the video about “Incompetent and Competent Cultural Care” (2011), the first clip shows the nursing automatically assuming domestic violence when she saw a bruise on the patient’s back. However, she failed to realize that the client was Cambodian and having that origin the patient has unique health practices like cupping to help relieve pain. It was also interesting to find out that particular culture has a protocol in breaking up a piece of bad news. In fact, for Utopians, if an individual is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the report should be discussed to the family, and this will be brought up with the council. The decision of the council shall prevail whether it is proper to tell the patient the medical diagnosis. Given these scenarios, it became clear that nurses must be culturally aware and culturally sensitive in dealing with patients. Personal bias and inhibitions are among the barriers and challenges that prevent nurses from being a culturally competent nurse. The videos had been able to show how a culturally relevant nurse can be useful in dealing with the patients. It had been able to show that by being culturally sensitive, a nurse can help patients toward the road to recovery and wellness. Furthermore, patients will be able to adjust and calmly process their situations which can lead to safe and healthy wellbeing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I have gained an understanding of health practices diversity and personal choices. Culture is not limited to issues of religion, traditions, customs, and practices. It also includes own beliefs and personal dispositions. A nurse is conscious of the own reasonable beliefs and personal dispositions of every patient. These include sexual orientation, preferences, and advocacies to avoid conflict and possibly to offend the patient.
