An understanding of the relevant historic and cultural information in the context of health care provision is fundamental to the African American patient. Such patients, due to the legacy of slavery and institutionalized racism as highlighted by the Tuskegee syphilis study are generally mistrustful of the healthcare system (Eiser & Ellis, 2007). Most African Americans have religious orientation and the power of African American churches originates from the role of the church during and after slavery and its involvement in the civil rights movement. Cultural competency research here incorporates such cultural and historical elements. Here, the greatest barriers include the fact that the scientific medical approach does not qualify religion along with the historical distrust of institutions and racial discrimination. Suggested solutions include sensitizing practitioners to show courtesy for African American religious beliefs and establishing rapport on the personal humanity of such patients (Eiser & Ellis, 2007).

Though discussions around ethics are normally distanced from those of research projects, the moral integrity of the researcher is key to ensuring that both the research process and findings are accurate, valid, and trustworthy (National Association of Social Workers, 2017). Looking into the history of ethics in research also underscores its importance. Specifically, the Tuskegee syphilis study and its contribution to the safeguarding of informed consent. Another important lesson is in the nature of social services, which is hard and presents daily ethical uncertainties and challenges. This insight underscores the importance of the National Association of Social Workers code especially considering that it addresses the responsibilities of a social worker towards patients, colleagues, employers, and the profession (National Association of Social Workers, 2017). Therefore, it has become obvious the importance of ethics in research and its connections to social work. Ethics provide the standard upon which the profession of social work is accountable as well as the basis on which the research process and findings become valid and trustworthy.
