The global community is changing towards the adoption of healthier lifestyles compared to the early 21st century. The aging of baby boomers and the rise of Millennial to form 28% of the U.S. population and 50% of the working population has led to the rapid changes in lifestyles of the individuals (“OIA ConsumerVue 2020 Forecasting Report” 2017). These factors and the high rates of obesity issues has increased the need for the U.S. and global population to change their diets and embrace fitness and wellness activities. However, unlike the traditional form of fitness and wellness gyms, saunas, spas, and other training programs, yoga studios and health clubs have changed the industry. Yoga studios and health clubs rapid development and embracement in the past five years with rates as high as 10% and 3.9% annually respectively since 2012 changed the aspects and components of fitness and wellness programs to enhance the social aspects of training and increasing technology in the social space (Welltodo. 2018: Lague, 2018). Millennials change in habits and higher values towards fitness and wellness have changed their mentality and individual lives towards including exercising among their most important tasks. That is the inclusion of exercising in the same category as a family, work, leisure, and socializing. Therefore, this essay reviews the current trends in fitness and wellness using the trend to determine the interrelationship between these community-based fitness and wellness programs in connection to the health of children and youths in New York.
Current Trends
According to Kale (2018), the social aspects of fitness and wellness program has formulated and changed the social integration among the practitioners. Sirin Kale argues claims that unlike in the past where the British expanded their social scope in bars and other drinking parties, ‘squat party’ which are training or gyms that takes place at night substituted the bars as the main source of building social ties with like-minded individuals (Kale, 2018). The article demonstrated that the embracement of technology and enhancing social engagement have resulted in people sharing their experiences and by having focused on enhancing their fitness and wellness, these individuals form a community. The study depicted that boozing and bitching about the weather or the two Bs is declining among the youths engaging in the squat parties and using it as a platform to form a social community (Kale, 2018).

According to Weinswig (2018), U.S. consumers for wellness is becoming a new status symbol that integrates the health-minded individuals partaking fitness classes and sharing social fitness events. The growth of the fitness and wellness industry to more than 3.7 trillion in 2015 is associated with this mentality and integration of technology in the social space created by the programs. She argues that consumer in these programs use social media and other web pages to communicate, support their peers, and other activities such as teambuilding thus forming a fitness and wellness community. These communities can be informed of health clubs. Data statistics depict that health clubs in the U.S. serve over 60.9 million individuals, which is equivalent to 10 million increase since 2012 (Weinswig, 2018). Weinswig (2018) concurs with the Kale (2018) that consumers of the fitness and wellness products are replacing restaurants, bars or cafes as social hubs. The studies also depict that unlike in the past that people choose to hide or avoid contact before taking a bath, sweat is becoming one of the most important aspects of training (Kale, 2018 : Weinswig 2018). The more sweat, the better the exercise, and fun. Millennials have changed everything and increased the use of more adventurous and high intensive training (HIT) compared to other passive modes of lifestyles. For instance, the launch of Ivy Park with Topshop by Beyoncé in 2016, Fitness tread in-home fitness equipment by Peloton and the Good American activewear brand by Khloé Kardashian in 2018 supports the changing aspects and acceptance of fitness and wellness engagement (Weinswig, 2018). Celebrities such as Beyoncé tend to influence millions of youths, therefore, her support of fitness made it cool and influenced the youths to adopt a similar lifestyle. Youths tend to focus on the sense of belonging and copy celebs to fit in the society. Therefore, appearing to be cool is a fundamental factor in involving fashion in this essay and a way to understand the role of such high profiled celebs to influence youths and children in joining the fitness and wellness communities.
Obesity Problem in Children and Youths in New York
The essence of fitness and wellness fitness community is to mitigate the epidemic and costs of dealing with the high rates of overweight and obese population. However, statistics depict that New York is among the states with the highest number of obese or overweight individuals. As of 2016, the estimated population in New York was 19, 795,791(CDC, 2016). Overweight and obese adults are 34.1% and 27% respectively whereas that of children was or adolescents were 13.8% and 10.6% with overweight and obesity problem respectively.
The high rates of adolescent obesity and overweight are due to the lack of physical activity with only 25.7% of the adolescent engaging in at least 60 minutes daily exercise (CDC, 2016). This means that 74.3% are inactive contributing to the high costs in dealing with the obesity problem and projecting a failure of the government to diminish the trend of unhealthy lifestyles. The high rates of inactivity perfect relation to the continued increase in obesity in New York since 2007. This trend also depicts that failure to invest in fitness and wellness community will increase in the risks of chronic ailments and costs associated with these ailments. Obesity is the main cause of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular ailments, hence the proposal to embrace the changing lifestyles in fitness and wellness communities.
Organization Plan
Wellvyl is a fitness and wellness community organization that embraces the current technology and social features of exercising. The organization believes that the best way to enhancing healthy lifestyles is founding their training or practice on the social wellness. Therefore, it has a social dub that focuses on inclusivity, positive thinking, health activities, and having fun. Adolescents tend to express some delinquent behaviors if they are uninterested in a certain important activity, for instance, if parents of the obese or overweight children or teens try to force their children to engage in physical activity, the children may rebel. However, enrolling the teens in Wellvyl would enable them to interact with other teens with similar issues, which reduces their anti-social behaviors, and boost their positivity (“Wellvyl – MEET. MINGLE. BE WELL.” n.d.). The community-based fitness and wellness facility would mitigate the rates of overweight and obesity in the state hence the government should support the company through finances and curb future issues.
