Information systems have proven to be vital in the world today, even within the health sector. Within the health care industry, and specifically in nursing, it is defined as a specialty that integrated information science, nursing science, and computer science to manage knowledge, data, wisdom, and information in nursing. In the Emergency Department, informatics has become vital, especially because of the rapid technological advancements that are also being quickly absorbed into the daily practice. Information systems have proven to be useful in managing workflows within the emergency department. It has helped in managing the department through a data collection tool and workflow framework that is used to collect real-time information about their patients.

Information varies from personal information, insurance status, and time of admission, primary diagnosis, prognosis, and discharge. Data collected through this system may be useful in determining performance and effective management strategies (Clark et al., 2017). This could be through evaluating activity service targets for the department’s attendances, measuring the total number of patients admitted, discharged or transferred within a specific time duration, and the total percentage of unplanned re-attendances within a certain time frame. Each system is set to meet the needs of different hospitals within the state. The system can also be used to determine patient demographics, especially when linked to other existing health systems such as Meditech, TOPAS, and PAS.

Informatics is also linked to Evidence-Based Practice, with its sole purpose being to provide efficient and effective patient care. It may be used to determine potential problems at an earlier time, especially since the patient information is readily available. This is also vital as it aids in recording patient interactions and reactions to certain modes of treatments (Chandler et al., 2016). Generally, the system makes work easier for nurses, as the filing system is also made easier. Nursing informatics makes the practice easier as it improves overall efficiency and reduces the potential of errors within the Emergency Department.
