A vacuum cleaner is a machine that uses electric power to suck up dust and any unwanted materials on the floor and carpets. The vacuum cleaner is a reliable and convenient tool for cleaning to the household ( Keil, 2011) . The vacuum cleaner makes the tasks simple and easier with pleasing outcomes. The air within the house becomes purified thus eliminating any chance of health risks caused by air pollution.
Components of Vacuum Cleaner
A vacuum cleaner is essentially composed of an intake port with a brush that sweeps dust into the suction channel. The intake port serves as a way through which the air particles and impurities enter into the vacuum unit. The electric motor gives the momentum that drives and rotates the fan blades ( Weber, 2009). The fan works to create the partial vacuum by causing the pressure difference between the inside of the vacuum cleaner and the outside environment. The effect of the fan pulls the air into the unit through the intake port. The filter removes any particles in the air that may have escaped from the dust bag. The dust bag store the dust and dirt particles. The exhaust port channels the filtered air out of the unit as clean air. The housing encases all the parts of the vacuum cleaner and gives protection for external damages. The diagram shown below shows the components of a vacuum cleaner.

Concept behind the Working of Vacuum Cleaner
The concept behind the working of a vacuum cleaner is the flow of materials from one point to another due to the pressure difference created between the two points. Vacuum cleaner uses the same mechanism as when one takes a sip of a drink using a straw. The suction works due to the pressure change created inside the straw. The pressure level inside the straw becomes lower than that of the outside. This pressure gradient causes the fluid to be drawn upwards into the mouth.
Working of Vacuum Cleaner
When the vacuum cleaner starts, the electric motor rotates the fan which in turn draws in air. The air flows in due to the negative pressure created. The air pressure behind the fan decreases while that in front of the fan increases ( Keil, 2011). As the fan continues to rotate, the air pressure inside the vacuum cleaner decreases and causes an increased air pressure outside in the surrounding. The constant rotation of the fan creates a partial vacuum inside the vacuum cleaner. This partial vacuum sucks in air that attracts along the dust, dirt, and any other small particles through the intake port. The dirty air gets pushed into the filter bags where it gets filtered and exits the vacuum cleaner as clean air through the exhaust port. The impurities remain trapped into the dust bags.
Design Considerations
The manufacturer designs filter bags in a way that it ensures the exit of clean air free of any impurities. The area around the exhaust port contains filters that make sure the air blown out is clean. There is a possibility of certain dirt particles escaping with the air back into the house in the absence of these filters. The intake ports with smaller size have higher suction power. The vacuum cleaner has to maintain a strong airstream all through to perform effectively and efficiently.
Applications of Vacuum Cleaner
A vacuum cleaner has a wide range of applications. They are widely used in removing dust from air or other components. Vacuum cleaners are mostly utilised in electronics, packaging, big manufacturing plants, centralised vacuum homes, customised appliances, metal working trade, Mill feed, pharmaceutical firms, painting trade and other numerous fields.

The significance of Vacuum Cleaner
A vacuum cleaner is used in different ways and different intentions in the various fields mentioned above. For example, it is domestically used for cleaning purposes; in the textile industry, vacuum cleaners are used to collect together heavy and light substances; the appliance is also widely used in hospitals to cure toxic substances. The use of this appliance has made some works very easy as well as made people save a lot of time. This has been achieved as a result of its speed and efficiency. Through this, people get extra time to do other chores or tasks, thus, the appliance is very significant.
Conclusion
The technology of the vacuum cleaner came in handy to solve the problem of eliminating dust in our dwelling thus making cleaning efficient and fast. Apart from cleaning, the device have other wide ranges of applications and is very significant both domestically and in the working environments. Thus, every individual ought to have this excellent appliance in their home as well as in their working environments.
