The Initiative of the IOM Report

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (JWJF) worked together to evaluate and improve the nursing practice. These two organizations realized that the nursing practice faced enormous challenges in responding to a reforming health care system. Therefore, IOM and RWJF come up with a two-year initiative, focusing on improving the nursing profession. The IOM and RWJF committee was the pillar of this initiative. The objective of the committee was to produce a report, outlining recommendations focused on reforming the nursing practice (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The committee also outlined the needed reforms in institutional and public regulations at the federal, state, and local capacities.

Nurses work in a wide range of settings, both at the federal and local levels. The initiative, therefore, was to transform the nursing profession in public hospitals, homes, schools, public health centers, battlefields, and community centers. However, nurses have varying capacities of education and skills. The initiative recognized the central duty of nurses in transforming American health care. In general, the initiative envisioned the future of the nursing profession across settings, roles, and education levels (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The messages developed by the initiative have played a vital role in transforming the nursing practice.

The Impact of the IOM Initiative Report

The IOM initiative had a considerable impact on nursing training, education, patient care, and health care facilities. In the nursing profession, the initiative transformed the place of nursing in the care system. In particular, it recognized the powerful role nurse-government collaboration and the partnership of nurses with other institutions such as the insurance industry to enhance the care system (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The initiative targeted the policymakers, national, and local systems of governance. Institutions of higher learning, licensing bodies, and advocacy groups had to work together to improve the work of the nurses.

The initiative also recognized the importance of reforming nursing training and allowing care professionals to practice to full capacity. States in the US, for instance, have different regulations when it comes to nursing practice and regulation. Therefore, the initiative put forward several recommendations for national, state, and local policymakers to implement best practices to enhance the nursing profession. There was also a need to reduce nurse turnover by improving the transition from nursing school to full practice. The initiative also urged the national and local governments to transform nursing education to allow nurses to deliver the best, safest, and patient-centered treatment (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Client-care was also central to the recommendations made the by IOM initiative. In particular, the initiative recommended nurses to collaborate with care providers to improve the experience of patients. Moreover, redesigning the workforce or effective workforce planning was vital to improved patient outcomes.

Lifelong Learning, Clinical Reasoning, and Clinical Judgement

Lifelong learning increases clinical reasoning and clinical judgement. Nurses work in complex environments and treat new diseases often. This means that nurses must stay updated in order to offer the best quality and patient-centered care. The nursing education focuses on developing vital skills, such as critical thinking. Lifelong learning can increase knowledge and expertise in a specific area of specialization (Van Graan et al., 2016). Moreover, lifelong learning allows nurses to apply strategies such as reflective thinking as part of their profession. In addition, lifelong learning increases creativity and intellectual integrity. Lifelong learning reduces the gap between theory and practice. In other words, continuous learning allows nurses to apply clinical reasoning and clinical judgement to solve complicated cases (Van Graan et al., 2016). In general, nurses should pursue lifelong learning in order to improve their critical thinking abilities.
