Claudia, an 8th-grade female student, wants to be referred to as Claude and be identified as a male. Ms. Jaxson should accommodate her and allow her to be who she wants and feels comfortable with being since, denial of a chance to be herself would lead to low self-esteem, self-hate, and even self-harm. Claudia should be given an equal opportunity like the rest of the students to fit in and go about her typical day to day activities without fear or feeling discriminated because it’s her right. Ms. Jaxson being her teacher should try and understand her as well as offer guidance to Claudia. She should be supported in her journey of transformation from Claudia to Claude by being provided with a conducive environment whereby everyone in the school and society will accept her after the process. She was born that way which is natural therefore it’s not her fault, and it’s unfair to deny her the chance to be natural.

Claudia is a transgender student who only seeks to be allowed to be herself. With the right guidance from her teachers, parents as well as her fellow peers, she can be Claude in a safe environment without being treated or viewed as different from the rest of the students. More often such students tend to face discrimination in schools and do not have resources and education on transgender issues (Mckinney, 2005).These students usually end up feeling left out. Every student is equal and should be made to feel that way. Claudia needs a counseling program which will give her excellent guidance. Counseling programs reduce anxiety and depression and promote social skills (Whiston and Sexton, 1998). The school should develop and implement a counseling program for the students where they can interact with each other and counselors as well as necessitate consultations and necessary guidance on such issues affecting them; therefore, they won’t have to feel alone (ASCA National Model, 2003). The government needs to develop laws that accept and support such students as Claudia as well as protect them.

Denying a person the chance to be who they would lead to depression, denial, and even suicide. It does not harm allowing Claudia be Claude since this would make her more productive in school and the society at large and lead a more fulfilled, comfortable life. The community should embrace and accept everyone with their differences.
