The table below shows the substances that were found inside and outside the dialysis tube

Substances found inside and outside the dialysis tube

Before and After the Diffusion

A+ shows the presence, while A- Shows the absence

Substances

Inside dialysis Tube

Outside Dialysis tube
Before After  Before After
Starch  A+ A+ A- A-
Chloride Ions  A+ A- A- A+
Sulfate Ions  A+ A- A- A+
Albumin  A+ A+ A- A+
Glucose  A+ A+ A-  A-

The substances were placed in the dialysis tube, which was placed in a culture solution containing distilled water to test the movement of the particles contained in the substances across the membrane. It is expected that the substances that diffused from the dialysis tube to the culture plate containing distilled water would contain the particles of the substance in the plate after the experiment. This implies that the color of the distilled water in the culture plate would resemble the substance in the dialysis tube if the substances would have diffused from the tube to the plate. On the contrast, the color of the distilled water in the culture plate would remain the same if the particles of the substance would not have diffused across the membrane.

The starch tube was found to be yellow inside, while the outside did not show a color change, which depicted that diffusion, did not take place. On the other hand, the albumin tube was green inside and yellow outside, which showed that there was diffusion. The tube for glucose showed no observable changes, showing that diffusion did not take place. Consequently, it was observed that the tube containing the chloride ions was white on the inside, while the outer parts were clear, indicating the process of diffusion. The sulfate ions were also indicated by the changes in color, where the dialysis tube was blue in color, while after the experiment, the distilled water was found to contain the blue color. The movement across the dialysis membrane shows that some substances are permeable, while others are semipermeable.
