Dionysus is the main protagonist in the Bacchae . He is the character that I find to be unforgiving because of the heinous acts he is involved in. He has many forms, one of them being that of a god. I find it ironic that a god of fertility has turned out to be that of vengeance and one that causes fear and pain in the society. Dionysus perform certain acts that are indescribable and unfathomable. Mostly, he strikes his ‘enemies’ with madness and causes them to engage in regrettable acts. Agave’s scene is one that I found to be grotesque and horrifying. In fact, it can be a source of nightmare to the audience. After she is made to be mad by Dionysus, she is able to accomplish his (Dionysus’) selfish plan. She murders her son Pentheus in the most inhumane way. A choir of women are also coerced through the divine power to tear Pentheus apart. I think this is one of the most tragic scenes in the play. It also demonstrates how merciless Dionysus was.
Another interesting thing about Dionysus is jealous. Actually, all the tragedies that faced the people of Thebes were as a result of Dionysus egoism. While he wanted to avenge because of the way his mother was treated, he also wanted to impose his teaching on people of Thebes. He wanted his religion to be the most dominant. He also wanted to be the only god being worshiped by the people of Thebes. I find him to be a jealous god who fails to allow people to make independent choices about who they want to worship. He is also insensitive and cunning. When Agave finally kills her son, Dionysus ensures that she regains her sanity. This is very disturbing, painful, and horrible. She suffers immense emotional pain after realizing what she had done. In a nutshell, Dionysus is the opposite of what people expects of a god. He is a merciless and a callous god. He only cares about his life.
