Close interpersonal relationships are few and far between. They will only come into being and survive if they attain mutual near-perfection. The adjective close is among the fundamental prerequisites of this kind of interpersonal relationship yet its definition goes a long way in determining whether the relationship succeeds for me. If the relationship is too distant, then it is no longer an interpersonal relationship and can easily be relegated to the status of friend or acquaintance. On the other hand, if the relationship gets too close, I am liable to feel boxed in and in need of more space. The ability to maintain a balance between neither too close nor too far is, therefore, a primary ground for a successful close interpersonal relationship. Honesty is another key characteristic that I would expect. I believe that hard truth is better than a white lie, more so when it comes from a close friend. For example, such a person should be able to tell me the difference between when I sound funny and when I sound silly. Loyalty is also an important characteristic making for a person who will be able to stand with me even when doing so is uncomfortable.

On the other hand, lack of respect and boundaries would be among the primary vitiating factors for an interpersonal relationship. There is a world of difference between showing concern and being nosy. Similarly, there is a big difference between offering advice or a point of view and being controlling. Although an individual with whom I have a close interpersonal relationship is a person with whom I would share a lot of personal information with, there will always be boundaries that I would not cross, and I would also expect the same. Further, I would have problems being too close to a person who is stuck in a rut and unwilling to progress in life for fear of being pulled back too. I do not believe in too much ambition, but I would expect someone who will challenge me to achieve something in life.
