How have social policies impacted you and your life?

The government's social policies have impacted both positively and negatively on the quality of life. Policies on health like the Affordable Health Care Act has proved beneficial in the way in which medical care is granted and its quality (HealthCare.gov, n.d). The legislation has improved quality and affordability of healthcare in the country. Thus, I have access to best quality medical care at an affordable cost. Security policies have also had an impact on my life. While the policies may infringe on my privacy in certain situations, they considerably prevent or reduce incidences of crime.

Which social policies have upset you, and why?

Social policies on immigration seem discriminatory and outright biased. These policies are complex with final decisions on admissions lying on the immigration officers or the president (Belcher & Martin, 2013). Consequently, many applicants are denied entry based on unexplained reasons or their inability to guarantee some requirements that are beyond their control. For example, war situations create the need for intervention to alleviate human suffering in the affected countries. Baseless denial of admissions for citizens of these countries goes against the moral obligations of the government. Furthermore, religious bias has also emerged as a thorny issue in immigration. Immigrants need to be granted equal opportunities regardless of their religion.

Which social policies have made a positive impact on your life or the life of someone you know? How have they made a positive impact?

America’s education system is lauded as among the best in the world. The policy provides freedom for choice of school and selection of career path according to performance and interests. These policies have been beneficial on a personal level as well as to colleagues. With the freedom to choose the school to attend, my choices are based on performance and the best environment. Policies requiring employers to provide safe working conditions for their employees are also beneficial. The policies have been beneficial to a colleague who worked in a foreign country under poor conditions leading to ill health but returned to the US and found employment which contributed to his full recovery.
