The most challenging and diversity situation I experienced as a nurse in one of the hospitals in United States was the stereotypic nature of patients. Some were very adamant to accept change because they were so deep into culture. I experienced one very difficult situation when a woman patient visited our hospital with an ailment which required urgent surgery. The surgery could not go on because the husbands from their society were the sole decision makers. The physician called her husband and he gave permission for the operation to go on but again the patient refused and said unless her husband arrives no operation would go on but luckily he just arrived a few minutes later and the operation was successful.
In future, it will be of great essence to involve the local leaders to create awareness on cultural sensitivity because we have experienced many patients die because of their cultural beliefs and behaviors. Some cultures like those that leave a husband to be the sole decision maker even on serious health matters needs to be sensitized. Recently, we have experienced an increase in the number of those who get freed from the ruthless claws of culture due to massive awareness creation through local leaders. The greatest concern when dealing with diverse populations is language barriers where if there is no interpreter, there will be no effective service delivery.

The video advocates for culture sensitivity. We are seeing a patient who was turned away from the hospital by being requested to book an appointment for treatment at a later date yet she was very ill and this made her to seek medical attention from a different hospital. This was because she was from a Spanish speaking nation and the hospital was an English one. In another case, where a patient who has broken his leg receives better attention and care because he received an interpreter
