There are several barriers for nurses to educate patients. To begin with, time constraint forms a substantial barrier for nurses to educate patients. Also, the use of jargon in addition to medical acronyms by the nurse may make it hard for the patients to understand (Arnold & Boggs, 2015). Additionally, beliefs, values, and assumptions of the nurse may be a hindrance to his/her teaching. Each person makes assumptions grounded in his/her cultural or social values, beliefs, traditions, prejudices, and biases. Unfitting assumptions can bring about offense.

There are several factors that affect patient’s ability to learning. First is the level of education or literacy. The higher the education or literacy level, the higher the ability to learn. Another factor is the previous learning experiences. Outlooks toward imminent learning of the patient are affected by learning experiences some time ago. Also, the physical condition of the patient influences his/her ability to learn. The patient won’t be willing to learn till he/she is comfy adequately to listen to the info presented. Moreover, emotional wellbeing affects the patient’s ability to learn. There the emotional condition of the patient must be favorable to learning before training is performed van (Rosse et al., 2016). A patient, who is temperately anxious regarding his/her illness, will perhaps pay attention to the presentation of info which will assist him/her deal with the condition Lastly, sensory capacities influence the learning ability of the patient. Therefore, the nurse needs to note any shortcomings in the patient's hearing, sight, or touch in order to plan the teaching appropriately.
