The United States is ranked top in incarceration worldwide, with more than 2.2 million people serving a jail sentence. The number of the imprisoned individual has increased with over 500% in the last forty years ( Morgan-Mullane, 2018). More than 2 million children in America have at least one parent in prison. Research conducted by Morgan-Mullane, (2018 ), shows that over 20% of children with an incarcerated parent are less than four years, 60% are children between the age of 5 to 14, and 16% are adolescents aged 16 to 17 years. When patents get imprisoned, children are left in the hands of the community, states, and government to offer care protection. Other children are taken to foster care to start a new life in the care of foster parents. Children who have one or both parents in prison are affected psychologically, emotionally, and their educational performance and social life are affected. Thus, the children require special therapies like Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Trauma-Informed Services, and Mentoring to help them cope with the situation.
I have chosen the topic of parental incarceration's effect on children since it is both a social and criminal justice issue. After reading several literature and listening to various testimonies from victims, I developed an interest in the area. According to Robinson & Landrum (2013), observation is one effective way of identifying a topic of interest. The issue has been researched in the field of social and criminal justice and also in psychology. Therefore, adequate sources will be available to write a fascinating capstone project. Every day, hundreds of American children lay on the streets lonely with no place to call home after been chased from their houses due to the inability to pay house mortgage. As cases of parental incarceration increase, the number of children been left behind by parents is rising drastically. Society is left with a huge burden and responsibility in taking care of the children and helping them cope with psychological torture. Lastly, various theories of sociology and criminology are available to explain and explore the topic.
