I chose to use an article from the Lancet journal. The report by Thornicroft, G., Mehta, N., Clement, S., Evans-Lacko, S., Doherty, M., Rose, D., ... & Henderson, C. (2016). Evidence for effective interventions to reduce mental-health-related stigma and discrimination. The Lancet, 387(10023), 1123-1132. I chose to research on this topic as there are numerous people with mental health issues. There is a lot of stigma around mental health issue; thus, the need to remedy the stigma and ensure those suffering feel welcomed and loved by their society. While researching the article to use, I had a hard time determining which database to use. There were multiple databases with articles on the same issue. I also had a trying time in deciding which article to use as there are several articles on the issue of stigma and discrimination related to mental health. I believe this database would be useful to my colleagues as it has several articles on various scholarly articles with information related to mental health, nursing, chronic diseases and other medically related issues.
The article explains how rising discrimination and stigma results in even worse consequences that the debilitating condition. Stigma in health facilities facilitates the undermining of successful health outcomes, diagnosis and also treatment of mental diseases (Nyblade et al., 2019). Evidence-based practice on stigma reduction has helped in the development of interventions that facilitate the quick recovery of patients with debilitating conditions. The authors show how most research is on the attitudes that people have towards mentally ill patients (Thornicroft et al., 2016; Kemp et al., 2019). There is a need to, therefore, come up with interventions of stigma related to mental health. There is evidence of the effectiveness of anti-stigma interventions such as social contact. (Mehta et al., 2015). Practitioners, however, need to be aware that the effectiveness of the response is based on the rigor and replicability of the practitioners .
