Communication involves the passing of information from one person to another. The information can be passed either verbally or non-verbally (Valentine, 2008). Passing a message can be done through a number of various modes. The mode of conveying a message will depend on the type of message being passed and even the relationship between the sender and the sender. At my first job, I worked as a cook, I managed to build a strong relationship with my supervisor. When my supervisor quit the institution and a new supervisor was brought, things turned around. When I consulted him verbally, she assured me that my school schedule would not interfere with my weekend work schedule, which I was doubling up with. Surprisingly, her actions proved otherwise. Later, the boss informed me that a certified cook was needed for my position, but she at first did not complain of my cooking. He then started by reducing my working hours, and within no time, I was demoted and was now working as a dietary aid, which led to a reduction of my pay rate. I realized my supervisor’s actions contradicted what she had informed in spoken words. Due to her actions, I developed suspicion on her intentions towards me, especially when she tried to take me off my work position, and recommended I work as a dietary assistant. She had given my previous position to a dietary aid she brought with her from her previous workplace.
With the development of the situation, it was not easy to keep trusting my supervisor, since she was not consistent in her communication. This is because she had failed to do what she had previously promised. Relating this scenario to nursing practice; in a healthcare setting, nurses require proper working conditions and this can be made possible by having reliable and consistent leaders with whom you can agree with one thing and hold unto it. Nurse leaders are supposed to display characters which they would wish to see in their employees (Valentine, 2008). Most leaders, however, take advantage of their employees. For instance, ethics require nurses to show empathy to patients, but only a few individuals apply empathetic management on their clients, others have been victims of their own mistakes they make during communication.

In a number of situations, I have made many mistakes in my career, most of them I managed to solve instantly. For instance, I can recall a situation when I received a mail from one of my co-workers, the mail was having punctuation mistakes and I happened to misread it. The mail was with positive intention but due to the wrong punctuation, I read it in a dire tone. We had a tense conversation with the co-worker and he clarified the intention of the message and we realized that it was mistaken. We both, therefore, agreed to practice verbal communication regularly so as to avoid the reccurrence of the same situation.
