Monitoring the Future has used an appropriate sample size because it is a heterogeneous representation of adolescents from all regions in the USA. Random sampling is used in this research since it is assumed that adolescents have equal selection chances. Also, there is a similarity in drug and substance abuse characteristics. Alternatives for subject recruitment include the quota sampling method in which the researcher outlines the required study subjects. Quota sampling is quick and easier as the extra information speeds up the process and achieves a high level of accuracy. In addition, volunteer sampling can be done by asking adolescents to volunteer in participation.

Randomly sampling of adolescents to analyze drug and substance abuse using questionnaires may not be the best way to identify students with substance use disorder due to the probability of force answers. Drug and substance screening is more accurate. Screening can be done by analyzing blood and urine to determine the drug level in the body system. Triangulation of data collected during the sampling procedure can be done by the researcher can using multiple questionnaire investigations on the adolescents. In addition, triangulation can be done by changing the theory on which the study is based—for instance, adjusting the ratio of boys to girls used.

Application Exercise 5.21

In the assessment of women in parole, the right data size has been used since it is a good representation of the research population. Convenience sampling has been used because the population under study is homogenous with a certain characteristic of being female parole. Convenience sampling on the subjects could be alternated with snowballing sampling technique whereby female parole refers the researcher to another correspondent to be used for the research. In addition, the volunteer sampling technique could be used to conduct the research in which the female correspondent paroles participate on a voluntary basis.

Accessing female parole agents through the convenience sampling method is the best approach to conduct research. Using convenience sampling in this scenario is appropriate since the participants are easily reachable, and the method is fast (Etikan et al., 2016). Interviewing the correspondents gives the researcher detailed information that will help in data analysis. Triangulation of results from the women in parole research can be done by the use of multiple correspondents for diverse information. In addition, a researcher can utilize multiple investigators while conducting the interviews for a variety of opinions.
