Innovation signifies an effective and a better way of handling problems in the health care industry. Embraced from the marketing industries, business and technology, innovation has been used to describe technologies, services, ideas, system, products and policies that provide and improve the solutions to the existing problems in the industry. This report looks into research and development innovation and customer-based innovation in the health care industry.
Research and development innovation is crucial in healthcare. It has played an essential role in the healthcare industry, especially in information technology. Rapid advancements have been experienced especially in the multimedia which have yielded to reliable provision of telemedicine service (Maender & Poutney, 2015). Telemedicine can be described in three different areas; teleconsultation, direct patient treatment and tele-education. Teleconsultation entails the transfer of professional information or knowledge from a physician to a non-professional individual (Maender & Poutney, 2015). Direct patient treatment involves a physician and a patient who are in different places far from each other. Through the use of communication systems and tools, the patient is diagnosed and treated by the physician (Maender & Poutney, 2015). In tele-education, physicians and other individuals in the healthcare are provided with updated information (Maender & Poutney, 2015).

Telemedicine enables patients to freely get medical care at the comfort of their home. It also allows long-distance patients to be monitored by physicians at an appropriate time and makes services readily available to the patients (Maender & Poutney, 2015). Telemedicine curbs the effects of poor quality treatment that patients receive because of delays in therapeutic and diagnostic interventions and also unnecessary tests. Though telemedicine services are not common, any development brings about a quality of life and efficiency.
Innovation in healthcare industry has provided improvements that have enhanced patients’ access to different services which has improved patient safety. Developments in information technology have yielded progress on electronic medical records whereby patients access their record even from the computer at home (Nolte, 2018). This has helped in the elimination of misinterpreted verbal orders or unreadable writings of physicians. Patients can follow up their medical records, and if need be for consultations, the patient can contact his or her physician. Through accessing the medical record, patients can take charge of themselves but with the help of the physician. Accessing medical records gives the patient control over their health (Nolte, 2018). Patients also can check their doses as they access their records and can even set options as a reminder to prevent skipping or overdosing (Miraldo, 2019).

Conclusively, the two home care innovations are suitable for the patient considering that it has good results for both the physician and the patient. They both provide the patient with a sense of empowerment, knowledge and motivation. They also help in supporting positive change in the behaviour and health of the patient (Nolte, 2018). There are also challenges facing these two innovations, which include patients' inadequate technical skills to operate a computer and sometimes following up medications. Expensive technology hence cannot be afforded by many patients. The service is not familiar to many people; therefore, there is a need for awareness.
