The abolitionists were a movement that appealed on behalf of the people of color to end white supremacy. They were not as quick as they would have wanted to be, but they did achieve their goals (Carpenter, 2019). Their main goal was to end slavery, which they did since people are no longer enslaved today. The initial abolitionists were responsible for the creation of the American colonization society. Some of the main abolitionists included William Garrison, Fredrick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth (Carpenter, 2019). William Garrison was a publisher of the Liberator newspaper and took it upon himself to burn the declaration of independence (Carpenter, 2019). Others like Douglass and Truth spoke out on the evils of slavery.
These abolitionists had the belief that slavery was a sin. America, as a nation, needed to be rid of the sin. They were, therefore, in haste of ending the act as they petitioned and pleaded to Congress through their movements (Carpenter, 2019). Later on, the movement became more active with new energy. It was during this time that Garrison burnt the copy of the declaration of independence. After this, the southerners became defensive and refused to release the slaves making other abolitionists angry towards him (Carpenter, 2019). However, the abolitionists did not stop persisting for the end of slavery.

Congress got tired with the persistent petitions that the abolitionists had. Congress then passed a gag resolution to stop petitions on stopping slavery (Carpenter, 2019). By doing this, they ended up polarizing the situation, thus leading to the civil war. It was eventually after the civil war that the slaves got freed. The civil war was, therefore, a result of the petitions by the abolitionists (Carpenter, 2019). Thus the abolitionist was effective in ending slavery in America.
