Communication entails sharing information and getting feedback. Technology in communication has encouraged individualism as people become more private and limit personal interactions. It has shaped how people relate to each other in public places. Additionally, it has denied communicating individuals the chance of detecting facial expressions when sharing information. The disadvantages of technology have adequately reduced the quality and quantity of real conversations. It has seen people not paying attention to dialogues, as they prefer discussions on social media platforms. The dependency on technology is likely to increase due to the increase in technological innovations. Technological advancements are inevitable, and it is advisable for people to self-regulate the time they use on high-tech communications. They should learn to create meaningful face-to-face conversations by avoiding these distractions.

Communication today has advanced, gradually leading to digital communication being a regular option for the majority of people. Digital information sharing and feedback has affected how people interacted physically. Technology has made communication easier as people can use the Internet to conduct daily activities online and share information virtually over long distances. The use of digital communication affects how personal relations are developed as it ignores factors such as facial expression (Geladi, 2018). For instance, connecting through phone messaging apps may deny one the chance to detect the mood of communicating people. A sad person may mask their expressions when sending text messages; thus, the respondent will not display appropriate reactions. They will imagine the sender is fine, which is necessarily not the case. Technology denies a person the actual comprehension of the current situation between communicating individuals because contact is not present. It may also contribute to a person getting the wrong communication for an intended message. Although some online platforms like Whatsapp allow sharing of images, videos, and voice recording, it does not provide a personal connection among communicating parties. Additionally, online platforms give room for people to fake their lifestyles. They relay information that offers a different perception from the life they are living; therefore, one cannot discern if one is suffering or not. It limits personal interactions, as people prefer communicating with each other virtually. Consequently, personal relationships are strained, as people do not meet physically, therefore, restrict trust among people.

Although smartphones have facilitated instant communication, it has affected how individual communicate in public places. The presence of mobile phone gives one the illusion of privacy hence limits personal dialogues in public (Badger, 2012). Even in public places, the user acts as if they are isolated from the surrounding. It reduces the fundamental roles that one would engage in when in a public setting. Therefore people do not interact or observe what is close to them. An active phone user may not remember all the happenings they were part of as their concentration was limited only to the phone engagements. Using smartphones in public denies one the opportunity of having a meaningful conversation with each other. As phone combines most of the life functioning such as emails, maps, and messages, it limits one’s social code. A person in a public place will not ask a stranger for direction, but they will search for it on their phones. Additionally, a person using a social media platform will be in a dilemma to either act according to the social codes of the place they are in or the platform they are engaging in. An individual may avoid eye contact, which is vital in communication as they spend time looking at their smartphones. This is because most phone users concentrate on sharing information online. For instance, an individual may engage in tweeter chats other than discussing the same topic with the next person in a bus stop.

The use of technology in communication has effects on its quantity and quality. As it allows distance communication, people favor having a virtual conversation with distant friends, relatives, or colleagues other than actually meeting them for dialogues. Instead of spending time with them the presence of modern communication technology people use text messages or calling (Nilles, 2012). Therefore the time people see each other is reduced. The amount of text messaging cannot be equated to spending time with a loved one as it does not have a personal touch. The messages sent could be less than the information people would share when close to one another. Additionally, one misses vital expressions such as smiles, laughter, and emotions that are important for an evocative conversation. These expressions require people to see each other. Technology, like mobile phones, reduces the quality and quantity of physical interactions. For example, during a family trip, everyone focused on their smartphone. It is challenging to have a participatory discussion when speaking to people who are busy communicating with their online friends. Occasionally they miss a point you just relayed due to earsplitting. The family members do not effectively engage in bonding activities because they are distracted by social media conversation. The real meaning of the family connection is not achieved as the members focus on taking and sharing pictures with their online networks instead of enjoying the moments with the kin.

The dependency on technology by a human being will increase because innovations will be established in the coming years. Owing to innovations making life simpler people will readily accept it. It is not easy to resist change when people around us undoubtedly embrace it. If one refuses the technological advancement, they will be seen to be backward. The only change that people need to embrace during technological progress is to foster personal connections. They should not over depend on technology to communicate. When in public places, they should avoid using their phones when having real conversations with each other. Additionally, people should limit the time they spend on virtual conversations and encourage creating personal connections.

Technology advancement is unavoidable in the current world. It has its benefits, but it affects how people relate with each other physically. Over-dependency on technology to communicate limits personal contact with friends, family, and colleagues; thus, one should moderate the time they spend on them. Physical interaction is highly valued as individuals create a personal bond and trust with each other. Moreover, observing social code when in public place enables one to see and remember the occurrences. It makes one part of the society as opposed to a private individual moving in a public space. People ought to be moderate with the use of technology and strive to develop personal connections in society.
