Question 1
The adoption of healthcare technologies, such as electronic health records (EHRs), has facilitated faster healthcare information exchange. The adoption of EHRs has helped to secure the transmission of electronic information with other clinicians and patients. This strengthens HIE and means that healthcare practitioners and their care partners can share appropriate clinical data in a uniformly-accepted manner that protects patients' privacy and data (Minnesota Department of Health, 2015). EHRs also enhance interoperability, which allows the electronic sharing of patient information between different healthcare providers and EHR systems. Interoperability is essential to HIE because it ensures the successful exchange of information across the healthcare setting. EHR plays a significant role in helping healthcare institutions understand their practice's HIE readiness by allowing them to assess their technical capabilities (Minnesota Department of Health, 2015). If a healthcare organization can attain EHR certification, it means that their EHR system has capacities, functionalities, and capabilities that are comparable to other EHR systems. This will translates into efficient and secure healthcare information exchange. Therefore EHR facilitates faster and secures HIE.
Question 2
NHIN and HIE have been integral to healthcare delivery and the practice of healthcare providers. The Nationwide Wide Health Information Network is responsible for setting standards, policies, and services that enable healthcare information exchange over the internet. The utilization of NHIN reduces clinical errors and adverse drug events. It also helps to reduce the cost of care by instituting electronic health records that increase efficiencies. Therefore the implementation and application of NHIN result in increased quality of care, cost-saving opportunities, and increased patient-provider communication ( Godby et al., 2016 ). The implementation of HIE has helped to improve healthcare outcomes by ensuring patient safety. HIE enables access to up-to-date and accurate patient data. This reduces the chances of medical errors and improving the quality of care (Minnesota Department of Health, 2015). HIE also helps to improve communication between practitioners and caretakers, families, patients, and third-parties. Aside from this, HIE also streamlines practice processes, and this helps to reduce operating costs. Therefore the implementation of NHIN and HIE helps to improve care delivery to patients.
