An ethical dilemma is very tricky situations and needs an individual to have problem-solving ability to handle it in a manner that makes the situation productive. It is not necessary to say no or yes to a particular situation; other alternative can always be given a chance so that both the goals and the personal dilemma is considered when making a decision. To make a sound ethical decision there are eight steps which can be followed or considered. Their eight steps will be applied in our case.
Case of Tobacco deal
In this case, I will do everything possible not to ruin my reputation with the company and also not to spread lung cancer which I had happened to be a victim when my father died. For this reason, I will accept the deal as a consultant and use my power to convince my company to reconsider their reputation in the market and entire food production industry basing my argument on the effect of the tobacco and the number of individual who may suffer when the deal is a sign. My intent at this point will be to ensure that the deal fails on an issue based perspective, not at personal level. This will make sure that I retain my client and also keep my promise.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
Solution to the dilemma
Gathering the facts; my first action will be to carry out research on tobacco. I will look for any single fact that I can use to convince the company on the issue of tobacco. They will include laws; the effect on the population, the negative effect the company may suffer as compared to profit and table them to the company’ CEO.
Defining ethical issue; my second action will be to pinpoint ethical issues that may relate to the company policy and entire public that signing a deal with Tobacco Company may violate. For instance, the company is known for producing food products. Engaging in tobacco deal will in a way interferer the customer’s rights since there are some customers who would rather die than associating themselves with tobacco. Also, it will be against company policy to protect customer since this is like giving a go ahead to kill them by inflicting lung cancer on them.
The affected parties; I will make the company know the number of people this deal will affect when it is signed. For instance, the customers will be affected when it down to them that the company they trust is linked to a deal which has a negative effect on health, this may reduce sale. The company’s reputation and that of the CEO will also be at stake.
The consequences; to convince the company further, I will outline the consequences’ of the deal. First, it may lead to drop in sales once the customer overheard of it. Secondly, it betrays the trust of the customer, thirdly, it ruins the reputation of the organization and lastly, it does not promote health among customers since you can’t preach water and you drink wine.
The company obligation; I will remind the company and the CEO of their obligation to their customers and public. They are obliged to protect the rights of the customer and to earn their trust. This cannot be true if the company encourage tobacco smoking which is health hazards.
Character consideration; I will ask the CEO to consider the reputation of the organization at this point. What image it may create in case any competitor utilizes this weakness to attack the company. At this point, my intention will be to defend my passion of not involving in this tobacco business.
Potentials action; At this point, I will give my alternative the CEO. After narrating all these, I will come up with policies, terms, and conditions that will discourage both companies so that the matter is abandoned based on issue’s disagreement.
Checking the gut; this is all about the feelings one have on the impending action. At this point, I will tell the company that the contract in my perception may not work well for the company. It may bring more harm than good for the company.
