The EKOS catheter is an EndoWave Infusion Catheter System that capitalizes on the use of ultrasound pressure. EKOS catheter plays a significant role in the treatment of pulmonary embolism, which is a condition that is characterized by blockage in the artery, within the lungs. The EKOS catheter focuses on generating ultrasonic energy that emits high frequency in the treatment area. The emission of ultrasonic energy helps to penetrate the body tissues to ease the blockage in the artery. The EKOS catheter ensures that the clot becomes permeable, easing the blockage, which is a significant measure in treating pulmonary embolism (James et al., 2017). For effectiveness, the catheter is inserted through the thrombus using an ultrasonic wire, a technology that ensures that the clot is dissolved. The technology applied by EKOS plays a significant role in promoting the effective treatment of pulmonary embolism as it helps to reduce blockage in the artery.

Considering the risks associated with the technology, patients diagnosed with pulmonary embolism and do not meet the criteria for treatment using the EKOS catheter tend to use other treatment options that are necessary for effective treatment of the condition. The most appropriate treatment, in this case, involves the use of blood thinners and drugs for the patients that present allergic reactions and risks of infections (Khan et al., 2019). When focusing on the use of EKOS, it is essential to capitalize on risk stratification, which is an important process that helps to group patients based on the level of risk. In low-risk patients, there are few physiological effects for procedures that require minimum sedation. In immediate risk patient groups, there are moderate risks that may include blood loss and changes that relate to hemodynamics. For the high-risk patients, undergoing different procedures results in major hemodynamics changes and may result in a significant increase in blood loss compared to the immediate-risk patients.
