Implicated within the understanding of the disease, limited and unsubstantiated information is detrimental to its treatment or management. Consequently, as a patient of Encephalitis Lethargica, it would have been one of the most frustrating challenges to face. While all patients were misdiagnosed and socially represented as alcoholics, I would have opted for more researched care (Marshall, 2019). Also, recognizing the severity of the disease in its progression, as well as the impact on mental health, will be an added advantage for the research. It is under such attentive focus on the disease that all other social diagnoses would fade and knowledge would be used to understand the disease. Therein, the exploitation of all avenues for the search for a better understanding would be paramount.

Research-based diagnosis is the basis of any advancement in medical fields as well as the expansion of the knowledge base. In context, therefore, Dr. Sacks work is profound in the attempt to understand the disease and treatment protocols. While there exist significant ethical issues in the research of catatonic patients, the severity of the Encephalitis Lethargica epidemic warranted the measures employed (Kovler 2014). Nonetheless, a patient in the condition of the disease is effectively trapped and imprisoned in their bodies. Therein, a chance created through research for the patients to have a resemblance of normalcy is not only an ethical responsibility but also a moral one (Clark, 2014). As a patient is such a condition, it would prove effective to use the misfortune of the disease to not only create awareness but also participate actively in the effort of a more understanding of the disease. Therefore, it’s in agreement with the methods employed by Dr. Sacks that would employ the ethical and moral obligations to respond to such a disease from evidence and knowledge based perspective.
