My Goals
Today, the vulnerable members of the society face a diversity of issues on a daily basis. Regardless of these issues, they need assistance on how to deal with them and live dignified lives. Social work is an effective tool that can transform these populations. I want to be a master’s level social worker because I want to learn about the different theories related to the discipline and how to use them to understand challenges that vulnerable members of the society face and their causes to find potential solutions. I believe that society is a system in which everything is interconnected. Any event that occurs at one place will spread across the entire system and change it. It is, therefore, important to understand how things interact to prevent adverse outcomes, which is why I want to gain more knowledge about these events.
My short-term goal is to ensure that I complete the Master’s education in social work. My undergraduate experience has inspired me to develop the desire to work with the vulnerable populations and attempt to improve their lives. A vital element of my experience is that members of this populations desire to gain the power to address the myriad of issues that they are facing, but many barriers, such as inadequate knowledge and inadequate resources, hinder them. By acquiring a master’s degree I will be able to teach them how to deal with those issues because social work involves dealing with issues in society. In the long term, my aim is to educate people, communities, organizations and societies as a qualified social worker of either a non-profit organization or a government organization regarding how to help the vulnerable members of the society solve their challenges and live fulfilling lives. I believe that the master’s program will help me acquire the required skills to attain my objectives. My other long-term goal is to become an innovative and effective social worker who can offer better services to the society. I also want to develop high ethical and moral values to ensure that I influence the society positively once I start working.

I will use my degree to improve the well-being of the vulnerable, oppressed and poor people by empowering them and assisting them to access the resources and information they need to change their lives. I will ensure that they access government services, receive counseling, and find meaningful work that will allow them to live fulfilling lives.
UT MSSW Mission and Goals
The mission of the UT MSSW program aligns with my goals because it also emphasizes the importance of attending to the needs of the high risk and vulnerable populations. My objective is to assist members of these populations by counseling them, listening to them, and teaching them different ways to deal with the most pressing issues. I will also educate them about the different resources and services that non-profit and government organizations offer to ensure that they have the right knowledge to allow them access assistance when needed.
Personal Qualities
I believe that social work is a demanding career that requires different kinds of skills to advise, counsel, and take care of others. In turn, this necessitates a solid set of important social work skills to ensure that I am not overwhelmed in different situations. I have several qualities that will assist me to be a good social worker. For example, I am an active listener, which will allow me to identify important details about people I seek to assist to ensure that I offer the right counsel. I am also socially perceptive because I can understand body language, different social cues, and multicultural behavior patterns, which will be vital when dealing with different kinds of people. I am also empathetic since I can sympathize with people’s problems easily to help them solve issues they are facing. I also aspire to improve professionally through constructive feedback from my superiors and colleagues. I do not see anything that can limit my capacity for professional social work.
NASW Code of Ethics
I believe that the society we live in has a diversity of people with different ideas and cultures. I, however, understand that we live cohesively because each one of us respects others irrespective of the existing differences. I also believe that through love and respect, we can live peacefully and solve any issue constructively to the benefit of the entire society. We can, however, not live cohesively and peacefully together if each one of us does not take responsibility for our actions and the words we utter. While we have the freedom to do whatever we want, we must ensure that we abide by the existing laws and teach our young ones about the importance of taking responsibility for the words we speak and the actions we take. Some of us are successful and live fulfilling lives while other people struggle with different issues, which is not their fault or the fault of others. The society is a system and different events combine to cause some issues, which we must deal with. It is, therefore, important to support people in need by empowering them to handle their problems. We also have different objectives, which we strive to achieve daily. Those objectives should, however, not lead to conflicts but focus on enhancing our lives and the lives of the wider society in general. Conflicts will always emerge, but we have the ability to resolve them through the existing systems, such as courts, and dialogue. I will reconcile any conflicts between my personal values and the needs of the profession by reminding myself that I chose to be a social worker and, thus, I should uphold the ethical principles, standards and values of the profession in all my work.
Social Concern
Drug addiction is a major issue in the community (Gramlich, 2018). There has been a sharp increase in the rate of fatal drug overdose cases across different populations (Gramlich, 2018). The main cause of this problem is poverty. Due to the lack of basic needs, people may be forced to use drugs to avoid thinking about their problems. Other causes include stress and bereavement, which contribute to the onset of the issue. The wider cultural and socio-economic factors also contribute to the issue, for instance, young people may be pressured to live a materialistic life that focuses on authorized leisure locations where drugs are available.
Since drug use reflects underlying social issues, the government should formulate policies that aim to address those issues through social intervention and improved urban planning. Social workers can also attempt to identify communities at risk of the drug use issue, and engage with them to understand their issues, educate them about the dangers of drug abuse, and empower them to take control of their lives. The police should also corporate with the community to identify drug dealers and users in neighborhoods with severe drug issues.
One of the challenges experienced when attempting to deal with the issue of drugs is the accessibility and availability of drugs even after an individual has quit using drugs, which prevents the reduction in drug abuse. The drug issue cannot be addressed also without addressing the underlying societal issues, such as poor urban planning and poverty.
Field Practice
This degree is very important to me and I know succeeding requires success both success in my coursework and in my field practice. I will cope with the demands of my study by managing time, motivating myself, being self-disciplined and prioritizing. I will first maintain a schedule that indicates what to do at specific periods, my goals, project deadlines and the amount of time I have. I will also maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating well and engaging in regular exercises, join friends during free time to chat to relax my mind and ask for assistance when facing challenges. I will also ensure that I have adequate sleep and ensure I am well organized throughout each week.
Additional Information
It is delightful to study for the Master’s in social work since this will give me an opportunity to learn about how to deal with different kinds of people, communities, organizations and societies in different settings and using the different set of skills to solve problems. I hope to learn from my colleagues and share with them my experiences.
