Epistemology: Belief, Truth, and Knowledge

Summary 

In this chapter, the author specializes in four main aspects, namely; developing tools for the wisdom quest, exploring what beliefs are and what makes them, analyzing knowledge, and getting clear on the truth and rationality ( Morris, 2011) . In his works, he backed that it is excessively clear to think that there is no belief that is rational for one to hold unless the believer is in possession of several decisive proofs that it is true. In his assertion, the author supports that logic is the art of making truth to prevail ( Armstrong, 1973) . The author collaborates with other great minds, and he supports that reason is of great essential in the life of a human being. He argues that one should always be led by reasons wherein, one should be reasonable. The difference between truth and falsehood is so much criticism in that is comparable with life and death. 

My Response 

Understanding the four main aspects delivered by Morris is so paramount. I have learned to differentiate the truth from the falsehood and their respective constituents. A true definition of knowledge is through encompassing a proper justification of the truth ( Morris, 2011) . I acknowledge the fact that the mind is the most dangerous weapon if the one possessing it does not know how to use it. The truth is the tie that we own to the world. It brings us to reality. Meanwhile, I would like to understand more about the issue of evidentialism. It seems to be a sensitive aspect, but the provided information is not sufficient to get the full concept. I look forward to being led by reason, which is something that we like saying lots of time. 

Summary 

The author captures the four main points as follows, looking at the ancient skepticism challenge, asking some of the questions that are deepest ever, understanding when one to doubt, and when to doubt our won doubts, and lastly discovering one of the most critical principles of rationality ( Morris, 2011) . The author asserts that our culture is wash in information and we are drowning in the data day in day out. He back the caution by other philosophers about the tendency naturally for the claim of knowledge where in fact does not exist ( Basu, 2018) . The ancient skepticism philosophy assists us to have the understanding of a deeper meaning of knowledge, and the features encompassing the concept. It is literally impossible in suspension of all the beliefs as per the suggestion of skeptic. 

My Response 

The aspect of a skeptic is a critical aspect as its constituents are not often used. I conquer with the challenge of memory and senses. I would like to understand more of how do we, in fact, get to understand the basic mechanisms of belief-forming like the experience of sense, memory and the reliability of such aspect together with the testimony. The issue of the absence of supernatural evil demons that are powerful and their hypnotization to us is not all welcoming ( Morris, 2011) . All the aspects discussed form part of my most basic beliefs in life. The chapter introduces the next chapter 6 for clear understanding and solving of the big questions presented in the chapter. Skeptic puts me in a situation that needs more clarification as it can put believers like me down, even though it has an important lesson. 

Summary 

In this chapter, the author focuses on the examination of the foundations of rationality, the glancing at empiricism, and rationalism, critiquing of the universal demand for the proof and evidence, and the discovering of an insight that is surprising about the belief that is basic ( Morris, 2011) . Reason cannot offer certification with proof or even any evidence that is good that forms most of the basic beliefs about life either being true, rational or hold. The author facilitates the way the issue can stand to be still rational to hold the critical beliefs with no proof or evidence ( Ward, 2017) . He assures that evidentialism being a false one is an essential aspect as many intellectuals have made trials to be the evidentialists, while they demand the evidence or to offer the proof for everything. 

My Response 

Primarily, the chapter has triggered my way of thinking. There is a lot that I have discovered in relation to the really basic beliefs. I would look forward to further information for the reliability of the sensory experience, memory at sometimes, testimonies, and the basic mechanisms of belief-forming at sometimes. I have a new understanding of the principle of belief conservation on what the philosophers referred to it as the basic belief. I have now appreciated the importance of evidence ( Morris, 2011) . With close speculation on the strangely gullible age, it is paramount to have in place the evidence. There is a great relationship between the chapters of the book as the author works on the basis of fully delivering the concept to the reader. I find it very important to have the concept.
