The class this week has been about discrimination and the different types of discrimination. Evidently, discrimination varies depending on the individual’s race, ethnicity, disability, nationality, gender, color, religion, age, pregnancy, or sexual orientation. Discrimination can also take place at different levels including the workplace. Consequently, the website talks about equal employment opportunity and describes the prejudices that may occur and subsequently how to remedy them. The website was set up and managed by the EEOC which is mandated with enforcing the federal laws that stipulate illegality of discrimination at the work environment, whether against a job applicant or employee based on their skin color, race, age, gender, sexuality, disability, religion or nationality. In addition to providing guidance and leadership to federal agencies in regards to equal employment opportunity program, the commission also investigates trivial matters regarding discrimination against employers who are as well duly covered by the law.

In the case an individual is discriminated under any of the tenets mentioned above, then the site allows the person to file a Charge of Discrimination before filing a job discrimination lawsuit, except for grievances under the Equal Pay Act. Additionally, an agency, individual, or organization can file a charge on behalf of another party in a bid to protect the party’s identity. The discriminated person may file the charge at the nearest EEOC office or in one of the 53 field offices of EEOC. As such, investigations are undertaken by and at the closest office to where the discrimination took place. However, the first step of filing is visiting the EEOC’s Online Inquiry System to find out whether the commission can take up one’s case. This system is set up in five states; New Orleans, Seattle, Chicago, Charlotte, and Phoenix. However, filing can be done in person through a meeting at the EEOC’s offices by submitting the necessary documents as well as providing further information regarding one’s case. Other than filing in person, an individual can present information about a discrimination over the telephone to get the process started, and such the information is delegated to the nearest office. However, the EEOC does not accept charges over the phone, but in the case of getting the process started, the offices can be contacted via 1-800-669-4000. An individual can also file a charge through the mail by sending a letter that has appropriate information and details such as your name, telephone number, and address, similar employer’s details, the head count of employees at the workplace, a brief description of the ordeal and when it happened among other things. An individual can file charges against discrimination such as disability, age, harassment (sexual or physical), pregnancy, religion, retaliation for refusing discrimination, individual’s race or color, gender and sexuality, genetic information, compensation or equal pay, religion, and nationality of origin.

Having the site online and accessible is a very significant thing in the sense that, an individual can gain useful knowledge about the various types of discrimination and as such know what to do in case they become victims. The site provides contact information of the EEOC office and how to reach them which is fundamental when needed. Moreover, the site gives easy to follow guidelines and descriptions of filing a charge which is a positive initiative. It also provides the different laws that cover both the employees and the employers and as such any of the parties can use the information in case of a complaint.

If faced with a discriminatory situation, this site will come in handy, more so the contact details and the guides to filing a charge. Being an American citizen and protected under the various laws regarding discrimination, this site most definitely could serve as an arsenal in handling my case without fear of being exposed or castigated.

Notably, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the reason for the creation of the EEOC in a bid to eliminate unlawful discrimination in an employment environment.

Conclusion

It is no news that discrimination still exists in the American society especially the workplace. However, thanks to the EEOC and the website, simple solutions exist such as solving matters through a mediator. As such, the creation of the website was an ingenious idea, and in so doing, the lives of so many people have been positively changed.
