Nathaniel speaks to different sets of the audience; the oppressed and the oppressor. This document narrates the struggle that the lowly in the society always have to confront. The fight for equality and against oppression began way long in the past. In essence, the document is a clear manifestation of the common good in a simplistic term. Common good, according to Bacon is the general wellbeing of everyone n the society; equal benefit to everyone and not a selected sector or a group of persons who thrive from the struggles and the sweat of the few in the society. According to Bacon’s understanding and arguments, the ‘common’ was the small white farmers; the people who struggle to make ends meet and attempt even to get simple recognition in the society worth of appreciation and acknowledgment. In Bacon’s context, the common was the white farmers who needed to gain more land from the Indians for their operations. According to Bacon, freedom essentially meant the creation and allocation of equal chances for all to make wealth. His definition of freedom was one-dimensional to accord chances to the poor through tax reduction, land allocation and call for equality.
Olaudah Equiano narrates of his ordeal and life as a slave. His narration is reminiscent o what the old slave trade patter used to look like. He was a victim of bad economic ideals that included the slave trades and persecutions. The larger idea behind Olaudah’s writing is to manifest the dangers and the sufferings that were common in the 17 th century. His narration is a reminder to the general public of the turbulent path democracy has traveled and the abuse of human rights that became common in the community. His address is to all races, the oppressed (black race) and the oppressor (white race). The race is a critical factor in this writing since the segregation that existed back then devoid of humanity and commonness is one that cannot be ignored at any cost. The race was understood in a different aspect, with the blacks seen as inferior while the whites were their superior masters.
