Nurses play a pivotal role in the delivery of quality healthcare services, which in line with local, state, and federal governments’ mandate. This great role means that nurses have greater responsibilities when it comes to ensuring that patients receive the best available care. In this case, nurses must have the capacity to provide this kind of care that emanates from in-depth knowledge in evidence-based practice. This knowledge is gained when nurses research various nursing, medical, and clinical fields to determine the best and most effective practices that could improve patient care. The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is committed to promote and improve healthcare outcomes by supporting and conducting clinical research.

National Institute of Nursing Research Priorities for Nursing Research

The National Institute of Nursing Research, whose mission is to build a scientific foundation for clinical practice, promotes nursing research, which is based on four priorities. The first priority, which is reflective of its mission, is building a scientific foundation to enhance clinical practice. In this case, nurses are required to provide patients with evidence-based care that is backed by clinical research to improve healthcare outcomes. The second priority is preventing disease and disability by applying research findings that are related to protective factors and risks. The third priority for nursing research is managing and eliminating symptoms that are caused by illness to improve patients’ healthcare outcomes (National League for Nursing, 2020). The last priority is enhancing end-of-life and palliative care by offering practical and emotional support to individuals with life-limiting illnesses.

Assessment of NINR Priorities

The four nursing research priorities form the foundation of nursing research as they address critical nursing areas ranging from disease prevention and management across various populations. The priorities should remain as they are since each of the four priorities focuses on a particular aspect of the nursing practice. There should be a need to add more priorities to deal with new and emerging nursing needs in an era of increased morbidity and better healthcare policies. The NINR should prioritize nursing education so that it captures new and relevant competencies as well as encourage life-long learning. It is not enough to have the four priorities if the nurses lack knowhow on how to translate the knowledge they have gained to engage in scientific research. In line with this, NINR should invest in nursing education that fosters nursing leadership, interdisciplinary collaborations, as well as the integration of healthcare technologies (Frakenberger et al., 2019). The other nursing research priority should be aimed at improving patient safety by establishing best practices in enhancing patient care. In achieving patient safety goals, nursing research should be guided by international safety goals that revolve around shift length and staffing levels (Al-Yateem et al., 2019). The new priorities are crucial in enhancing the other four all of which focus on improving quality healthcare outcomes.

How Nursing Research Initiatives can be translated into Evidence-Based Practice in A Healthcare Environment

Nursing research paves the way for the application of best and evidence-based healthcare practices in the prevention and management of illnesses. Research initiatives could be translated into evidence-based practice by integrating the findings into clinical practice. In this case, nursing professionals get requisite education to interpret research findings and conduct analyses to assess their suitability. The research design usually considers the translation of research findings into clinical practice by including its end users and the implementation plan (Curtis et al., 2017). As a result, nurses can adopt the findings to enhance transparent, safe, efficient, and effective healthcare that meets the expectations of patients and society. Nursing research is indicative of the centrality of the nursing professionals in adopting research findings and integrating them in their practice for improved healthcare outcomes. To this end, nursing research initiatives are a way of empowering nurses to use evidence-based practices to deal with new and challenging nursing and healthcare issues.
