Online counseling or therapy is a rapidly growing field due to fast technological advancement. Most counselors have opted for online therapy because it offers several benefits for both the patient and the therapist. For example, patients are no longer required to be physically present during such sessions, and counselors can offer their services at any time and location. Despite the advantages presented by online therapy, the fact that it uses computers and mobile devices raises serious security questions and other ethical concerns. Therefore, it is important to identify and discuss some of the main ethical concerns that should be considered when using technology in counseling.

Privacy is one of the main ethical concerns that should be considered when using technology for counseling. The fact that online counseling uses technology devices like computers and mobile phones means that they are prone to cyber-attacks ( Williamson & Williamson, 2020) . Cyber attackers can hijack such connections and retrieve confidential patient information. The information could then be used for criminal activities like blackmail.

Therapist competence is another ethical concern that affects online counseling. Unlike in traditional counseling, where patients can easily verify their counselors’ qualifications, it is hard to confirm the qualification and experience of an online counselor ( Williamson & Williamson, 2020) . Since technology in counseling is a relatively young field, there lacks an organized framework to guide the counselor-patient relationship.

Communication issues specific to different technology also serve as ethical concerns when using technology in counseling. Most technology in counseling is still in the development stage, and they are prone to failure or inefficiencies ( Williamson & Williamson, 2020) . For example, areas with access to quality internet and electricity may not enjoy online counseling.

Identifying the ethical concerns in online counseling is important in ensuring that people approach the new field with caution. Patients should ensure that they have taken all precautions before submitting their information online.
