Definition of Ethics

Ethics are described as the accepted beliefs, moral standards, and principles that guide the behavioral status and conduct of an individual in a particular task. In a more comprehensive context, they are the principles of a morality of duty and obligation and separate the right from the wrong.

How Ethical Concerns Affect Instructors

Copyright Infringement

Copyright is the law protection offered to instructors and authors in their creation of the original written material. Utilizing the protected copyrights of other individuals and organizations without their permission leads to an Infringement. In most cases, computer software and websites are used to conduct this unethical behavior. Instructors who engage in infringement of copyrights face two major criminal charges. Violation of others creativity without their permission is an ethical devoid of practice. First, the instructors can face penalties for civil damage. After being held liable, they are fined and could face jail terms. In the United States, the fine per infringement practice is 250000 US dollars. Secondly, these instructors could damage their reputation due to unethical acts of frauds.

Cheating

Cheating is unethical due to the fact that it gives the individual cheating an unfair advantage over the others. During examinations, the acts of cheating are very common among the student population. Lack of an honest environment from the student not only affects them but also affects their instructors. In the immediate sense, teachers who embrace honesty are affected by actions like that since they may feel that their hard work in teaching is devalued.

Plagiarism

To plagiarize is to steal and pass off the creativity, literature work, ideas, words and written thoughts as your own. Moreover, the failure to credit a reference source in the work of a writer where the original ideas of an author are presented as the writer’s own is an act of plagiarism. Plagiarism is unethical as it is an act of stealing others work and presenting it as yours. This is a fraud. Plagiarism affects the practice of teaching and learning. When students plagiarize their assignments, it demoralizes the instructors who are struggling to teach the students some important tasks and concepts especially those associated with honesty and self-belief. Nonetheless, students who plagiarize their assignments destroy the reputation of their instructors and it may take a long time to heal.

Improper Instructor/ Student Relationships

Poor connections between instructors and students are unethical in nature. In all learning institutions, there are established codes and standards of conduct that are incorporated into the culture of these institutions. These standards conform to ethics of good relationships and association. Thus people who relate poorly or relate in the wrong and dirty activities are devoid of ethics. A teacher-student relationship whereby teachers become too lenient to the students so as to gain acceptance and approval from students has negative effects in the end. The instructor becomes a poor manager in class and loses respect from the students. In the worst cases, sexual relationships exist between teachers and students. If it is discovered and the student is below 18 years of age, the teacher is guilty of a criminal offense. This is considered as a violation of professional ethics and trust. Nonetheless, this can damage the reputation of a teacher permanently and lead to loss of the job.

Why Ethics is an Important Topic for Army Instructors

Military life requires a lot of professionalism and as a result, ethics are a significant component in the personal life of militants and their instructors. In particular, military personnel need to conform to a set of moral standards during provision of military education and skills to the trainees. In an immediate sense, ethics reflect the service core values in the military. These include honor, courage, and integrity. Ethical teachings are necessary so that the Army can present the service core values.

Besides that, ethics guide the military on how to conduct a war. With this regard, the Army officials in battle consider whether the type of care taken while using weapons is discriminant or proportional. In discriminant care, attacks are made with a precaution against interfering with civilian life and property. Contrary, in proportional care, attacks made are meant to be destructive of what the military finds of importance to their duty. To address potential controversies that may emanate from these attacks, ethical morals and principles of honor, integrity and loyalty must be utilized by army instructors.
