When it comes to ethical decision making ethical intensity is actually the first place of reference. Ethical intensity is all about how an issue is important to a group or even to an individual. Ethical decision thus apart from emanating from the ethical intensity also has factors that influence it. These factors form the principles of ethical decision making.

Some of these principles that influence ethical decision making include the regulatory and legal provisions that reign in the environment that one makes the decision. A company can disagree with some legal requirements but when the consequences come to the fore, the company adheres and has to make ethical decision making. The other principle that influences ethical decision making is long-term interest for self. The self-interest has to do with the pursuit of that which will benefit the self in the long run regardless of how long this takes. Personal virtue is yet another principle that influences ethical decision making. Personal virtue is about conforming to the righteous standards that one believes in. In personal virtue, the decision is solely about the honesty and truth of the individual. Individual rights also help people make ethical decision making in the society. Individual rights have everything to do with the provisions of the law where individuals act with the freedom as long as the freedom is within the confines of the law and beneficial to the individual in question.

Ethical decision making is thus a matter of making decisions subject to individual preferences and at the same time inferring other factors that affect the entire society not forgetting the ethical intensity of the individual involved. Ethical decision making is therefore more of a personal issue and has little to do with the expectations from the society.
