Public health covers a wide range of health issues in society than just the hospital system that many people are familiar with. The role of nurses in public health is also far-reaching with a significant impact on society as seen in the video. One area highlighted in the video that sounded interesting is the high-touch-low-tech programs carried out by various organizations and their effect on the improvement of a community's wellbeing. It’s a simple concept that emphasizes the role of nurses in public health and how healthcare should be more preventive than curative. This preventive nature of healthcare is the future of nursing, and the high-touch nature of programs highlighted in the video is a central aspect of this approach ( Ferrante, Balasubramanian, Hudson, & Crabtree, 2010). The idea of high-touch programs in public health was not entirely new to me, but it was interesting to see it being applied in the field by the nurses and yielding positive results.

The role of nurses in public healthcare is also highlighted in the video and not limited to hospitals or other healthcare facilities. It was quite eye-opening to know the different areas of public health that nurses can work in and effect bigger changes in people's lives than in the short-term interaction in hospitals. Public health nursing focuses on taking care of people in the context of a community, and I believe that this is a concept that needs to be practiced a bit more. Public health nurses can work in home care, as parish nurses, in churches, in prisons, with the homeless, in the public health department, and even overseas ( Winton/ du Pont Films, 2019). This wide work range demonstrates the scope within which public health nurses can impact the community and promote healthy living in the country, and the world at large. I have always looked at public health nurses majorly from a hospital or clinic perspective where they offer curative care services to patients. The idea of nurses working in the community to sensitize people on healthy living and taking care of there health needs away from healthcare facilities was a bit new to me. It was interesting to place nurses in these various areas of the community where their roles not only focus on the absence of disease but also healthy living.
