Ethical dilemmas happen frequently in places of work. There are various approaches to finding solutions to ethical dilemmas. In my case I used the value approach theory to solve a dilemma I found myself in a company I was working for over the holidays. Due to the use of digital communication in my work place to execute businesses, I found myself in an ethical dilemma with regards to information privacy and access. I was assigned by my supervisor to prospect security companies that would buy personal protective equipment and do cold –calling in order to convert them customers. Therefore, I found the task to be tiresome as I had not done the task before.
I was new in the company and never expected to be assigned such a role. In that case I found myself in a situation I needed to get some telephone numbers from a colleague who had done a lot of prospecting in that manner. Since, the person was out of office, I found myself in a dilemma whether to access his personal computer to look for the numbers or not. I knew it was not right for me to access the computer but I was in dire need of the contacts as well. I had seen him key in the password before and I could easily remember the password and this tempted me to access his computer. According to James (2007), accessing personal computers without consent is unethical as it infringes on personal privacy. The knowledge of this fact is what made me guilty. However, after a lot of consideration of how unethical my act would be, I decided to ask for another colleague to show me the easiest way to prospect customers instead of signing into the other colleague’s computer.
