The responsibility of health care professional involves being an individual whose dealings influence them as well as other individuals at moral level. However, it is more significant to have moral context or personal ethic in which you ground your professional and practice relationship. Ethics is defined as the moral principles set that guide the behavior of an individual. Such set of morals are formed by religious influences, cultural practices and social norms. Ethics do mirror about what is bad, what is good, what is unfair, what is wrong and what is right in terms of people’s behavior. These ethics serves as the compass used in directing the way the individuals must behave toward one another, understanding and fulfilling their responsibilities to the community and living on their own lives (Von Weltzien, 2016) . The major aim of this paper is finding and developing the background for leadership and ethics in my profession as a nurse in health care field.

Nursing as a humanistic career is also undertaken in a stringent observance to values that have been reinforced from the common ethics, its antique, and its particular contribution to common approach of professional nursing. Ethical values which should be practiced in our nursing career include; commitment, collaboration, discipline, kindness, affection, self-esteem, justice, responsibility, truthfulness, and honesty among others. These virtues constitute the goals of the teachers and students in changing the lives of patients whom they will attend to and become part of their ethical code of conduct in nursing career (Barrett, 2017). 

In the context of self-assessment, it is of much value to reflect on which particular values are desecrated by our professional practice. Our values may be experienced and lived in a special way by the nurse professionals due to the profound reflections and morals on what we comprehend and acknowledge. The things that our society anticipates from us are pure professionalism in executing care to the patients as way of improving patients’ health. Every one of us has the capability to offer the solution to health problems from different perspectives. Therefore, some of us can do this based on their skills, emotional feedback, and outcome of optimistic experiences within the specialized care. The value which nurses attribute to work and the value of individual behavior, particularly ethical behavior determines their capacity to serve. We define values as the qualities which are awarded with happiness which is centered on actions, which makes them valuable. Nonetheless, there may reach a moment in our life when we can question our souls or need a rational explanation that enables us to judge the validity and the background of the things we require. 

Primary influences (childhood and adult) 

When I was young almost 9 years old, my parents realized that I could provide 100% to anything which I tried to do in my life time. My grandfather was a nurse, and I admired to be like him in my future career. I often told my parents about this and it seemed to be a dream to them. They started motivating me and teaching me of some good qualities of being a leader in future. “My child, in your future endeavors, respects everyone either young or old. You have to respect them so that you are respected. Secondly, you need to take care of others. If you do not care about yourself and others, you will not be compassionate and deliver quality care to other individuals. Learn to communicate well to others. Be ready to listen to the feelings of others and empathize with them. Finally be attentive in everything that you do.” These words are all what my father told to me. When I joined nursing school, I quickly apprehended it would take 100 percent of my sweat to attain an 80% academically! 

When I began doing work as a nurse, I tried to do everything perfectly at a 100%. After my first blunder, I felt brokenhearted and disappointed. I figured that I required no step by “attempting”. It was not up to the time I was doing work as a new Family Nurse Practitioner, that my cooperating doctor spoke some sense to me. The doctor advised me that I would learn from him and vice versa. “None of us is perfect, everyone do make errors, only what makes a difference is how you learn from such mistakes.” I realized that I do not have to be perfect but I only need to do my best. I would never often be perfect, and that is normal for everyone who is willing to learn. What a relief! It was right for me to tell my patients that I could offer some proposals and also refer them to the professionals and this was not only satisfactory but expected. 

Ethical principles that influence you personally and professionally 

I remember once my grandfather told me that never harm anyone in your life so that you succeed in life and this is what I recall when attending my patients. “Do no harm” is the precept that has guided me and this was from my grandfather. For any service that I offer within the hospital, I make sure that I do not cause any harm or even make the patients to suffer. I make sure that I have the ability to appraise the threat of the disease to the patients, utilize risk interventions and treatments in minimizing such dangers and maximizing the benefits. “Doing good” as a principle as beneficence is the second principle that guide me in my practice. Doing good does not cost me anything, so every time I attend to my patients I make sure that I do what is ethically right and promote the actions of the patient via supporting them during their healing and recovery process. Since I was treated fairly by my parents, I try so much to be just and fair when providing care to patients. Finally, I always allow the patients autonomy by respecting the decisions they make regarding how they want to be treated. We allow them to act on their own and be in control of their health decisions as long as it is within ethical standards of nursing practice. 

Ethical practice of professional nursing 

From what my father told me, I have learned a lot concerning professional code of conduct. Being a nurse is not such an easy task, it requires patience and persistence. Provision one for my nurse practice is being compassionate and having respect for the intrinsic self-esteem, value, and exceptional attributes of every patients within the health care facility. I maintain the highest level of respect for every person and consent dignity in regards to care communication. I make sure that the families of the patients are treated with dignity. When I am not sure of what to do, I consult my colleagues and work together as a team. I make sure that I understand very well the professional guidelines in every interaction. 

Every time I head to work, my main commitment goes to the patients, since they are the key to my calling in nursing career. Patients are the first and primary concern to me. I have to understand the patients’ requirement to involve their personal thought into care taking. During my practice, I realized that collaborating with external and internal team members in fostering patient care is of much importance. Furthermore, knowing the professional limits and the way they relate to the patient care is also significant. I uphold the principle of non-maleficence by ensuring that I do not purposefully harm my patients during care for them. While the procedure or the treatment may have some negative effects to the patients, I make sure that justice is served to them. I advocate for adhering to evidence based practice while examining and administering treatment to patients. 

Ethical leadership and professional development plan. Include both positive and negative aspects of your character that emerge when you are in a position of authority 

Being a nurse, I have to practice good leadership. I have done this through advising my colleagues to work together in order to achieve a common objective, for instance enhancing the quality care for the patients. I have a unique set of qualities such as courage, integrity, initiative and the capability to deal with the stress. Sometimes I dedicate to work beyond my shift to ensure patients receive the right services. As a team leader, I attribute to the value of individual behavior when dealing with patients to gain their mutual trust in our profession. 

In my professional life as a leader, I uphold the value of prudence and honesty before prosecuting every circumstance and the consequence to make the correct decision. I feel empowered and motivated by my colleagues whom I work with. I demonstrate to them what it means to be a good leader who cares about the welfare of patients and workers. I persuade them to embrace hard work and professionalism in nursing as the only way to gain confidence from the patients. I make sure that all the group members offer their level best of care to the patients’ needs and also motivating them to work together and consider the needs of the patients in spite of individual issues. 

On the other hand, as leader, I am strict in adhering to nursing practice guidelines such as maintaining hygiene. This includes washing of hands before attending patients, use of surgical masks, and hand gloves. Further, I do not listen to someone apology; I expect total compliance to ethical standards. 

In summary, e thics do mirror about what is bad, what is good, what is unfair, what is wrong and what is right in terms of people’s behavior (Van Meer, 2018) . As a nurse, I have the privilege to live in a distinctive period, when technological and scientific developments in telecommunications, genetic engineering and molecular biology have enabled me to obtain new captivating authorities in my life. Finally, I have moved to productive realm in new perceptions of life sciences and ethical life for my career.
