Both Excel and Mathcad are computerized platforms where calculations can be done. Despite their similarity in coming up with mathematical solutions, there are differences that are seen especially when it comes to engineering calculations. Engineering calculations are made up of complex formulas and therefore it is critical that one uses the proper platform (Maxfield, 2006).

One of the differences between Excel and Mathcad is the use of whiteboard versus formula bar. Mathcad will imitate an engineer’s book while using mathematical notations while entering the needed equations as they are therefore making it easier to print or publish without requiring any formatting (Maxfield, 2006). It is easier for one share and present calculations with the correct formula, therefore, verifying it is easy. On the other hand, excel requires understanding the cryptic formula syntax then the translation of the calculations which is then entered into a textbox. One cannot share such a format and therefore they will need to translate it before a presentation. It is also not easy to verify the correctness of the formula and solution depicted (Maxfield, 2006).

Lastly, Documentation is another difference between excel and Mathcad. Mathcad is conducive to the creation of a document. It possesses features that are similar to those in Microsoft Word such as paragraphs, bullets, text blocks, font, size, headers or footers, and alignment. Such features make it possible for engineers to come up with a proper presentation with explanations and at the same time show calculations with their formulas (Maxfield, 2006). On the other hand, excel is not suitable for word processing, therefore, one cannot have a good documentation with it. One may require redoing their math in Microsoft Word through the equation editor which does not calculate but rather for presentation purposes only. Due to this fact it is tiresome to use excel while carrying out engineering calculations Mathcad proves to be efficient and easy to use. The recommended platform for engineering calculations is, therefore, Mathcad.
