Hospice care involves end-of-life care in which nurses provide care to patients who are in pain and their last days or hours to death due to chronic disease. Experience with a hospice nurse helped me as a student nurse. It made me learn that hospice nurses manage pain and other conditions, giving support to clients and his or her families in preparation for death with dignity (Buss, Rock, & McCarthy, 2017). Besides, the hospice nurse has the responsibility of teaching the patient's family how to care for their loved ones at home. Also, hospice nurse has to ensure all equipment needed for the patients are available at the patient's home for appropriate care.

Moreover, hospice nurses are expected to perform the patient's assessments and outline a plan for professional caregivers of the patient to follow during hospice care. Besides, during end-of-life care, many patients need spiritual support. Therefore, hospice nurse organizes for chaplains, priest, or any spiritual leader who can assist the patient in his or her last times and support both the patient and the family spiritually.

Further, hospice care is aimed towards allowing the patient and his or her family to spend time together to honor the family, and show love to the patient. Also, hospice care ensures that the pain of a patient is minimized, and the patient feels comfortable before dying. Besides, the goal of hospice care is to treat the person and not the diseases (Buss, Rock, & McCarthy, 2017). Similarly, hospice care is advantageous to the patient because it allows the patient to make a last wish, and also it reflects on the person's choice towards end-of-life care. Finally, hospice care is a cost-effective alternative to high healthcare costs in hospitals. Many people choose hospice care because it is the only way they can reduce the cost of care they receive. Also, to relieve their families from financially straining to pay health bills.
