The purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to write on the reason why colonies had to become independent of Britain. The Americans believed in their rights. The declaration stated the importance of people’s right to live, be free and the right to happiness. The Declaration, therefore, was a document explaining why the colonies should break away from Britain. The value of the Declaration of Independence today is to highlight the importance of believing in equal rights for all.

The one historical fact that I was unaware of is that initially, Britain colonized America. It is the through the declaration of independence that the American people were granted the right to form a new government. This then has impacted on the current government since people were able to create a government that has been operational ever since ( Jost, 2012).

A comment made by John Locke about the division of power challenges my current understanding of how Congress operates. In his analysis, John Locke and other political scientists divided the responsibilities and powers of the new government formed. The purpose was to build a system that was to avoid tyranny by designing a system of checks and balances, and that would ensure that no branch among the three would grab too much power for themselves ( Jost, 2012).

Alexander Hamilton called the judiciary the least dangerous or perhaps the weakest of the three branches of government. I agree with that statement by Alexander Hamilton. Compared to the legislature and executive the judiciary powers are limited and depend on other institutions to implement its skills. Like the judiciary would rely on the prosecution institutions to exercise its powers ( Jost, 2012).

Political backgrounds in America interpret the constitution in different ways. The two primary political contexts in America are the Democrats and Republicans. The two remain deeply divided about how the Constitution should be interpreted by the supreme court The Republicans believe that rulings on the constitution should be based according to their original meaning (Kiley, 2014).
