It is necessary to conduct critical appraisal for a research article because it helps to determine its strengths and weakness. In this way, one will able to assess the usefulness of that research in advanced based practice in nursing and other departments in healthcare ( Papastavrou, Andreou, & Efstathiou, 2014). Factors to be considered when appraising quantitative appraisal include the applicability, reliability , validity among others.

The most important of them all is the reliability . It is the test of the consistency on the data in a given quantitative research. It means that for a study to be considered reliable , there should be repeatability of the results in all test . The importance of reliability test is to shows that there was consistency on the study results and thus can be applied in healthcare to improve the services offered. ( Papastavrou, Andreou, & Efstathiou, 2014). When a study shows consistency, it implies that the expected results from the study are useful and now can be applied to improve the desired services in healthcare. It is, therefore, one of the techniques that can be used to gauge for acceptability of research .

Reliability can also be used to determine if a given study is worth to recommend further studies or not. If the survey is reliable, it is then recommended to conduct further studies based on the results achieved. Furthermore, it is a way of determining if it is worth investing resources and time to enable researchers to initiate the study in that area. For a study whose preliminary results shows the consistency of the desired results, the then it gives the people carrying out that study to engage fully in the research ( Heale & Twycross, 2015). On the other hand, if the preliminary results lack consistency, then persons involved in it can be decided to drop that study to avoid losing many resources.
