Fair-mindedness is a concept that is cherished by many people, especially in leadership. A person who is a fair-minded thinker is always interested in knowing the truth and is willing to listen to divergent opinions or thoughts. The truth is often more important than ego for people who embrace fair-minded thinking. The main qualities of fair-minded thinkers include intellectual humility, courage, empathy, integrity, perseverance, and autonomy. People who possess all or some of these qualities can succeed in whatever they are doing.
The quality that I think I possess is intellectual empathy, which is the ability to understand the feeling of others, including their viewpoints. I am always eager and patient to understand other people’s thoughts, feelings, and viewpoints. In many cases, I strive to imagine myself in the place of others, which I believe is the main reason why I am empathetic. Besides, I always think about the concerns of other people. Intellectual empathy helps me in reconstructing the viewpoints and reasoning of others, which is required in fair-minded thinking.

The two main qualities that I need to improve include intellectual courage and intellectual perseverance. Intellectual courage is about facing the emerging challenges head-on while intellectual perseverance is about working through a challenge, even when there are some obstacles. I should improve on the two qualities to be a fair-minded thinker. Specifically, I will use the five-step decision-making process to improve on the two qualities.
The first step is the definition of the decision I am faced with. The main decision that I have to make is how to improve my intellectual courage and intellectual perseverance. I must decide on the best strategies that I should use to improve my intellectual courage and perseverance significantly. Also, I must decide on the implementation of the selected strategies.
The second step is the consideration of every possible choice for resolving the issue. The main considerations to resolve the issue include embracing failure and following the authentic purpose. Embracing failure can assist in improving both intellectual courage and intellectual perseverance because it makes people more creative and resilient. At the same time, following my authentic purpose will make me act fearlessly despite the challenges or obstacles that I face. The two interventions can help me in improving my intellectual courage and intellectual perseverance.
The third step is about gathering information and determining the pros and cons of the choices or interventions. Following the authentic purpose requires that I put aside my comforts, safety, and unnecessary concerns. I should train my mind to overcome limitations, and I must change how I perceive issues or problems. One of the major pros of this choice is that can help me in overcoming my fears, leading to an improvement of both intellectual courage and perseverance. The second advantage is that it can easily be implemented without using many resources. However, implementing the intervention is not easy because it involves changing mind. Embracing failure, on the other hand, is about confronting the fear of being a failure. The choice is advantageous because it can easily be implemented. Nevertheless, its main disadvantage is that it can lead to many serious mistakes or mass failure.
The fourth step is choosing the best method for resolving the issues. Based on the pros and cons of the choices, I believe that the best approach is following my authentic purpose. Even though the choice may not be easy to implement, it can lead to significant improvement in my intellectual courage and perseverance. At the same time, the decision can lead to long-term benefits, especially concerning fair-minded thinking.
Finally, I will construct the plan to implement my selected method. First, I will always learn to keep my eye on the bigger picture by writing the long-term consequences whenever I am faced with challenges. Secondly, I will often associate myself with people who are uplifting. Thirdly, I will foster my inner energy, mainly by understanding who I am. However, the main obstacle that I will face when implementing the strategies will be internal resistance to change. I will overcome this obstacle by forcing myself to learn or do things I am not comfortable doing, especially when they help me in achieving my objectives.
