The Challenges Fathers Face
Fatherhood USA reflects on the various challenges faced by fathers as they strive to make ends meet, as a unique experience. Fatherhood not only comes as a privilege but is also accompanied by a huge responsibility that requires hard work and resilience. The most common challenges facing fathers according to Fatherhood USA include low-income, incarceration, absenteeism, deadbeat dads (Lipschutz & Rosenblatt, 1998). The fathers in the film are not in a position to acquire better-paying jobs; hence, are forced to stay away from their children. Incarceration is another challenge faced by fathers making them spend time in prison, a situation that causes the children to grow without their fathers. Children that were raised by absentee or deadbeat dads tend to be bitter and deviate to “street life” due to lack of direction and guidance. The absence of fathers in their children’s life overshadows hope for a better life in children.
Programs and Policies Benefit Fathers and Their Children
Fatherhood programs such as support groups are at the forefront in the fight to eradicate problems facing fathers. These programs not only teach the men how to be good fathers but also provides a platform where they can seek support and solidarity. Fatherhood programs educate young men to become contributing to the betterment of the community. Fatherhood policies such as domestic violence assessment, child support agency, and the marriage promotion play a big role in promoting better fatherhood. The Child Welfare Department through domestic violence assessment and child support can identify needy families and provide support to them while at the same time hold responsible deadbeat dads. Marriage promotion policy is helpful in incorporation low-income fathers in the social welfare policy to help them support their families after marriage.
