Summary of Reading

Faith is strong belief in a religion that is based on spiritual conviction. Faith in people who believes in doctrines of a religion, provides purpose and meaning to their life. It creates a sense of belonging and security provided by the belief that there is a higher power that s in play and protects people. Faith can also be a source of happiness for people in such a way that it provides a common ground for people of different nationalities and is welcoming to everyone. Faith is essential in helping forge a way forward in life.

According to Kierkegaard, one can only be able to achieve greatness in the event that he or she has faith in God. The reason for that is that everything else might not be able to remain constant. Although it is possible for a man to achieve greatness by depending on himself, he can only do that but only to some extent. In the event that the individual meets an even that he cannot get through, then he or she will lose trust in self and thus fail to achieve what he was capable.

Similarly, a man can choose to get strength from others. Although these could be a great source of strength, they could be tough and impossible to depend on at times. A lot could happen including them lacking the resources or knowledge that they need when it comes to getting through specific situations. However, God is consistent and by depending on and having faith in him, it can be possible for one to achieve what they are capable of. An instance of that happening is in the case of Abraham and Isaac. Although the latter had been promised many descendants, he had not seen any for years but still had steadfast faith in God.

Analysis

Indeed, it does make sense to have faith in God. The reason is that humans are severely limited and depending on them for anything might be disastrous. Indeed, there are people who believe that they might not need others because of a particular asset. One instance is having talent in playing football. In the event that the individual breaks their leg and can never play again, will push him into stopping to believe in himself. Similarly, it is common for people to believe others more than they do themselves. For instance, one could have a well-connected uncle that is a politician and think of him as the best thing that could ever happen to him.

However, in the event that this uncle dies or gets into the wrong political affiliations, he could cease being as powerful as he once appeared. If the individual’s personal success was hinged on that of his powerful uncle, then he will definitely have no further motivation to push for the best in life. However, God is consistent. He is the one who determines how things will work out and also has the entire picture in his knowledge. While a man can only be able to plan what will happen tomorrow, God will know how that will go and how it will relate to the entire picture.

As human beings, there are instances when an individual feels like giving up in some of their endeavors. Although some give up and take other routes that are possibly easier, the right thing is to try and push through. It is in these instances of difficulties that one needs a lot of faith. This way, it will be easy for them to remain focused and achieve greatness.

3 Questions

What does God look like?

Being the most superior being on all earth makes the job appear tough. At the moment, there are almost 8 billion people in the world but it is not possible for them to keep and eye on everybody else. How then is it possible for one being to keep an eye on 8 billion different people? And what about animals? If there really is a God then he must be the most amazing thing that has ever existed. According to the bible, nobody has ever seen him.

Are there any Misconceptions related to faith?

One misconception about faith is that it is equal to blind obedience. On the contrary, it means believing on what is incomprehensible by the human mind. Another misconception is that faith is all one needs to have a successful life. However, it is also dependent on hard work and other minute factors. Nevertheless, it should be clear that faith is a very major aspect of any undertaking becoming a success.

Is it possible to have faith like Abraham?

According to his story, Abraham was a man of enormous faith. He had been promised to be a father of a great nation but he had grown old without anything yet. Her wife Sarah, who was to be the mother of the nation had grown into an old woman that was way past her child-bearing years. However, they still had the child and he still went on to become the father of many nations.

People are always trying to find somewhere to belong or people to belong to which is important in achieving happiness in life. Faith entails believing and following the teachings of the religion in which it is based, many religions believe in leading a moral life with no vices. Believing in the doctrines of a religion implies that the person also has to follow all the teachings.
