The Frankenstein by Mary Shelley's gives the encounters of Walton in his journey to the North Pole. My initial thought regarding this work is that it is a good fiction that the author manages to successfully convince the reader. The reader is made to view the encounters that Frankenstein goes through including assuming a creator role, which he does not cherish as expected of a creator or parent. One of the aspects that interest me in this novel is the survival tactics of the creature that Frankenstein creates employs when he was abandoned. After realizing that he had been abandoned by the creator, the creature devices ways of understanding things around him by learning how to read, write, and listening to humans’ conversations. Having no parental care, it is interesting how the creature decides to imitate humans but due to neglect from every member of the society who fled on the sight of the creature, it becomes harmful and wicked.
The Frankenstein was written in the 19th century and the historical context during this period was portrayed by distinct life and writing characteristics. The super natural character was a common feature that came with romantics. As clearly shown in the Frankenstein, social, political revolution, the cruel, and the Darwin’s theory were most popular. In addition, the novel was written at a period when people emphasized how powerful the human mind is and how the society is revolutionized through unchecked believe in humanity. The novel tries to show the dark side of revolution at a period when writers believed in the immeasurable power of humans. The nineteenth century was also a time of war. The French revolution and the American civil war led to the origin of ideas aligned to freedom and the right to equality. England on the other hand experienced a time of fear where the people in power were uncertain of their fate. This made them to pass several strict laws which assured them the nation’s stability.

One of the insights that come out in this novel from the biography of the author is transition in life. The author who was born in a family of educated parents later became poor upon the death of his husband. A similar life scenario is portrayed in the novel upon death of Walton’s parents. Just like Frankenstein who ran away from home to seek for education and to change his life, the author upon losing her husband continued with her writing to sustain herself.
The theme of death clearly comes out throughout the novel. Death is a significant event that occurred in the life of the author. The characters in the novel die in one way or another and almost all characters face death or intent to die ( Gray, 2008) . Although Frankenstein tries to alter the death process, he finds himself at the receiving end and finally realizes that he must die despite all the attempts he made. The novel points out that it is possible for an individual to die in peace if he has made things rights before facing death. This case was seen in the death of Caroline and Justine who were offered as a sacrifice. On the other hand, the government condemns two individuals to death and the author tries to inform us that we have no authority over the lives of other people. The nature should be allowed to take its course. The power of death is also expressed when Walton gets uneasy every time he loses a friend or relative to death.
This work is relevant to today’s audience because it enlightens people on the need to appreciate nature and avoid attempts to change it in our favor. Frankenstein fought for revenge whenever he experienced a loss but he was not able to achieve it. The current society practices revenge and the lesson from the novel should help them understand the purpose of allowing nature take its course. The knowledge I have gained from this work has made me understand the daily happenings of life and what we a humans should value. The work is well written to expose the activities that the society engages in and the small gods we have turned ourselves to be. It is a good fiction that humans can easily relate with regarding their daily life experiences.
